Elon keeps adding controversy in his statements and actions around his plans for the future of Twitter. This future depends on increasing the monetization of the social network, and of course: the App Store (and Google Play) would retain some of this monetization via the commission which has already put other companies on the warpath. .
Twitter needs every penny it can generate in its revenue, so its CEO must already be thinking about how to get around those commissions the same way they already do at Epic Games or Spotify. And not only that: Musk went so far as to say that an extreme decision he can make is launch your own phone to compete with iPhone.
When we all thought we were there, the “elonPhone” can happen
I sure hope it doesn’t come to that but, yeah, if there’s no other choice, I’ll make an alternative phone
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) November 25, 2022
Musk posted a tweet commenting on it following a thought From Liz Wheeler, head of The Liz Wheeler Show podcast:
If Apple and Google kick Twitter out of their app stores, Elon Musk should produce his own smartphone. Half the country would gladly get rid of its iPhones and Androids. This man makes rockets to go to Mars, so a smartphone should be easy, right?
Given this, Musk says “he really hopes it doesn’t come to this” but that if there is no other option “this will make an alternative phone”. You could classify it as one of his ramblings, but it’s about the man who, being bored one afternoon, ends up building a tunnel under Las Vegas in an attempt to end the traffic jams. Without much success, I must add.
It is assumed that an “elonPhone” would have a way to sell applications that save development costs, which would put pressure on Apple and Google. Madness? He can. Impossible? Leaving aside that he can do it right or wrong, with Elon we’ve already learned that he can’t.
