Epic continues to ask Apple to allow sideloading of apps and wants to prove the trial’s errors with a new document.
Months have passed since the legal dispute between Epic and Apple began, and so far the lawsuit has been in favor of those in Cupertino. However, the company in charge of developing and maintaining the game Fortnite was not satisfied and you have already submitted your document to prove the errors that have been made.
Apple terminates Epic’s developer account after determining that Fortnite violated App Store Developer Agreements led this couple of companies to clash legally.
In the final word of the lawsuit, Epic was denied clarity on its objections and the result was in favor of Apple. However, the bitten apple company must have realized that some prosecutors in various US states have shown their support for Epic, this being part of the “multi-attack” it has been facing for several months thanks to other big tech companies.
and although for Epic, the solution is for Apple to allow sideloading of applications and for developers to be able to manage their payment methods and earnings, Apple has repeatedly stated that this will not be possible. Even Apple’s senior vice president, Craig Federighi, said last year that allowing apps to be installed outside the App Store opens the door to criminals.
Epic no se rinde
Now, with a deadline for both companies to make their case in court, they have the opportunity to show additional reports and Epic wasted no time in doing so and released a Scribd accessible to anyone interested in the subject.
This document presents their defense in what they consider to be a “wrong answer” by the court which committed “several legal errors” at the last trial. Additionally, he addresses the subject of side loading by arguing that Apple allows it on macOS, so it should be the same on iOSBut that’s not the case, because if that were to happen, Apple would have to compete for customers with other developers who offer more or better than the App Store.
“Apple also claims that the repair requested by Epic will jeopardize the security of the iPhone. But this is not true. The operating system that Apple uses on its Mac computers (“macOS”) does not include the disputed restrictions found in the iPhone operating system (“iOS”), and Apple consistently promotes the security of the Mac. Apple also allows several alternative payment solutions on the App Store for applications that sell physical goods, confirming that the requirement to use Apple’s payment solution application, IAP, for digital goods does not have a pro-competitive purpose. If Epic prevails, the App Store No customer would ever be forced to use any of the things Apple complains about: an app store, alternative apps, direct downloads for app distribution, or an alternative payment solution. The difference is q Apple should compete for its customers.
There’s no real date yet for this to end, Apple said it expects a decision in the summer of 2023, but it’s not sure yet.
At the moment, Epic is still stuck on the App Store, and its most relevant game, Fortnite, has long been unavailable for download on iOS devices. However, there is already a way to be able to play it again on an iPhone and Apple can’t do anything to stop it..
What do you think, should Apple allow sideloading of applications or its policies are a guarantee of security and it is good that it fights to maintain them? It seems that there is still a lot of history in this battle and I hope the result is the best for the users.
