Dark Mode took a while to officially arrive on Facebook, but it finally arrived late last year. To the surprise of many users, overnight dark mode has stopped working in official Facebook applications.
This does not appear to be a regression, but rather a temporary error. While this is likely fixed in a later update, there are a series of steps you can take to try and fix and bring back dark mode on Facebook app.
Facebook’s dark mode disappears
There are many posts on Twitter from people who were surprised to open Facebook and that was on the clear topic. Basically, the Facebook app acts as if it doesn’t have a dark mode: if you had it enabled, the light mode is ignored and used, and also the setting disappears in the Facebook options.

The error does not appear to depend on a specific version of Facebook or to be linked to certain accounts. The same account on different mobiles may lose dark mode or continue to have it. In our tests, some of our mobiles still had dark mode, some didn’t.
How to get back to dark mode
For the moment, Facebook has not commented on this error on any of its social networks. The company uses to release a lot of updates for its app, so it wouldn’t be surprising if an update to fix it is already in progress. That is, if your retinas can bear it a little clearly, probably wait a few hours or a few days, the problem will resolve itself.
If you can’t wait any longer, you can also roll up your sleeves and try to fix it yourself. As a random error, there doesn’t seem to be a scientific and one-size-fits-all solution, although basically it all boils down to the same methods that are used to correct any other error: erase data, reinstall, reconnect.
In my case, I managed to bring the dark mode back to two different mobiles, although the same method didn’t work for both. A common step is to clear the application data from the menu Settings – Applications – Facebook – Suppress data. This will close your Facebook session.
On one of the mobiles, this was enough for the setting to reappear to change the Facebook theme, but on the other it still did not come out. In this case, the solution also went through update facebook app to a higher version.
If you are using the stable version of Facebook, you can sign up for the beta version of Facebook, so that a few minutes later you have an update available. If this is not possible, you can also install a more modern versiona of your APK, in APKMirror.
This, along with wiping data, brought Dark Mode back, but being a pretty random bug, it might not be a universal fix. If you are still having problems, you can try completely uninstall Facebook and reinstall a current or even older version.
Keep in mind, yes, the safest thing is that you will need to reconnect to Facebook, so have your credentials handy or you could be left with not only no dark mode, but no access to your account (until you get it back).
