Apple will face a future supply crisis with the OLED panels it intends to integrate into its new products.
Something ominous is about to blow up Apple, especially in Mac territory. Cupertino’s recent quarterly earnings report revealed a noticeable decline in Apple computer sales. The first effect is that the panel vendors stop investing in OLED production lines.
Apple and new Macs and iPads with OLED will have issues in the future due to production
According to The Electric, Panel makers Samsung and LG Display have yet to place orders for equipment that will help build the production lines. Gen 8 production lines are envisioned that produce more panels than the existing Gen 6s, which are already envisioned to cover what is needed in 2024.
The construction of the new lines is carried out in 1 year, it is therefore worrying that neither of the 2 suppliers has started the said construction. They didn’t because of concerns about the company’s profitability. Apple could invest in a startup but there is no guarantee how long they will be able to acquire such slabs. As it may well be a short investment and these production lines are not used.
Mac’s current numbers aren’t good at all
The present of the Mac at Apple did not leave good figures. According to those in Cupertino, revenue increased from $10.4 billion to $7.2 billion. The figures are in free fall compared to the previous quarter. The global PC market is in a recession that is also affecting Apple.
Related to this story, Apple has ordered TSMC to temporarily halt production of M processors. The current production capacity is running at half. It’s very OLED Macs are set to rise in price and therefore, if there is not a good sales margin, new releases could be a total flop.
Recently, Samsung announced that it will invest up to 4.1 billion USD in building OLED Gen 8 production lines until 2026. What no one knows is that Samsung has a problem with lawsuits from OLED machine vendors which require the payment of development costs, in addition to the price of the machines. LG Display is in the redTherefore, the two organizations could not guarantee an adequate supply of panels either.
By 2024, there are almost six months left. Apple has time to consult if it will make a decision on OLED panels. Apple’s plan is to launch the iPad Pro OLED as its first device, then the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro through 2026. Samsung may recover from its crises and keep up with demand, although it’s hard to predict. guarantee it due to the construction of the aforementioned line.
