Gone are the days when many users chose to modify their Android phones with custom ROMs. These community mods improved performance of cell phones that didn’t work as they should out of the box, but advances in hardware eventually buried them.
Despite this, some of the most popular ones have remained alive: LineageOS was updated to Android 14 a few months ago; The Pixel Experience gave a second life to legendary phones like the Poco F1 in addition to allowing other Xiaomi to forget MIUI. NOW, the latter says goodbye to us forever.
Sad news for mod enthusiasts
The Android system itself – developed by Google – and its corresponding adaptations in the form of customization layers, have improved significantly in recent years. Ten years ago, the situation was not so comfortable: ROMs were an escape route for users who were dissatisfied with the performance of MIUI software or Samsung’s Touchwiz.

Fortunately on the one hand, and unfortunately on the other, these modifications became less and less necessary, although they remained in a niche of enthusiasts who continued to rely on them to personalize their cell phones in detail. There Pixel Experience This is an example of this, as it allows you to replace the manufacturers software with software very similar to that of the Google Pixel.
It quickly became popular, especially among users in communities such as XDA Developers. A server spent a lot of time with this ROM on his Poco F1, which he always keeps in a drawer. And the improvement compared to the official firmware was more than obvious
Today you receive the saddest news: José Henrique, the main developer and founder of Pixel Experience, announced that active development is coming to an end. He did so through a publication on the official ROM website:
This project has been an incredible journey filled with innovation, collaboration, and unwavering dedication from the team and community. Since the creation of PixelExperience, our goal has always been to provide users with a smooth, customizable, and feature-rich Android experience suitable for a wide range of devices. As we say goodbye to active development, I want to express my deepest gratitude to all of our community members, testers, contributors, and supporters. Your passion and commitment have been the driving force behind every step we have taken.

Currently it offers adaptations for mobile phones from Xiaomi, Realme, Samsung, Motorola, Asus and even for some Google Pixels, based on the most recent version of Google’s operating system. Of course, these are still beta versions which will probably not leave their previous state with the announced death of the ROM.
Anyway, we say goodbye to an important part of the Android ecosystem – even if its use is not the majority, it is one of the characteristics of free software – which will go down in history for having worn all the Pixel Tool Suite to the rest of the Android device portfolio.
