Barely four months separate us from what will be the big update of the year for the iPhone. iOS 18 will be revealed in early June during Apple’s annual developer conference, WWDC 2024. The public release will take place in September. And even though we’re still in the early stages, the truth is that iOS 18 is already showing its legs.
Some fugitives like Mark Gurman have advanced some of the news that iOS 18 will bring to iPhones. One of them was recently revealed and fulfills one of those old desires that many have had for years: an interface overhaul.
iOS 18 won’t be like iOS 7, but it will bring aesthetic changes
Almost eleven years have passed since Apple launched iOS 7, an update that went down in history as the version in which *skeuformism* was put to rest with a new design that, even if it integrated new elements, disappeared. remaining essentially intact until reaching iOS 17.
This is why we have seen many redesign concepts for years, more inspired by a wish than by a real development by Apple. Now, for the first time in all these years, Mark Gurman confirms there will be a redesign. He did so in the private part of his latest Bloomberg newsletter, responding to a reader who had questioned him on this subject.
In response to a recent rumor regarding a visionOS-like design, Gurman said that iOS 18 will take over certain elements of the Vision Pro system, although he also lowered expectations by stating that it wouldn’t be a total inspiration. That is to say, no round icon designs as has already been seen on the networks. Likewise, a change as abrupt as iOS 7 is not expected.
Several months ago, Mark Gurman announced that iOS 18 would be an ambitious update that would bring new designs. Of course, neither he nor other reliable sources have yet come forward to predict the scale of these changes or to give clear examples. What he said was that macOS will also be redesigned, although later
Artificial intelligence will truly be the spearhead of iOS 18
In line with Gurman’s own leaks, and no matter how much we are fans of the aesthetic, it looks like Apple will focus more on the advanced artificial intelligence features. As we’ve said many times, iOS already has a lot of AI, even if it’s not as visible as ChatGPT.
A few weeks ago, Tim Cook himself confirmed that this would be the case, but the clues found are diverse and confusing, since No one can guarantee how this AI will be integrated into the iPhone. The big suspicion is that Siri incorporates a much more advanced generative language model than we currently have and competes with models like OpenAI.
Combining these integrations and the new design, and again quoting Gurman’s words, iOS 18 will be the biggest update in iPhone history. While expectations should be tempered until we fully know what this will look like, the truth is that there has never been so much noise as today in reference to such an important change. Because yes, there are always rumors and great desires, but there have not been as many certainties.
