It is not easy to innovate in telephony and, when you succeed, it does not always work. Under Android, manufacturers are experimenting a lot and, sometimes, even things that go well don’t end up coming to fruition. There are many technologies that we have benefited from for generations and then disappeared.
We have compiled some of these solutions which were quite cool and which, for no apparent reason, they ended up disappearing and without breaking into the Android market. Let’s do a little review to see how we missed some useful solutions.
pop up cameras
They have their detractors, but pop-up cameras were a great idea for getting closer to a future without guts
The main issue was their maintenance, as dust couldn’t get into them, and the cost of implementing this type of mechanical solution in a cheap phone. We have not reviewed this type of mechanismAnd he will be missed by some of us.
3D facial recognition systems
To date, only Apple has managed to create a facial recognition system that has been around for several years, Face ID. What is curious is that there have been few manufacturers who have had similar technology, but none maintained it. The Xiaomi Mi 8 had a notch that practically mirrored Apple’s, the Google Pixel 4 XL too, and those technologies have not reappeared.
Currently, bet on a 2D unlocking system through the camera of our phone, a less secure and efficient system than what we had a few years ago, a great loss.
modular mobiles
LG tried it with the G5 and Google put honey on our lips with the ARA project. The idea of a mobile to which we can change the parts of the phone fight against obsolescence. None of these projects came to fruition, another bucket of cold water in a solution that could have changed the future of telephony.
Samsung’s Instagram Mode
With the Samsung Galaxy S10 came Instagram Mode, a great idea to put an end to poor quality on social networks which has dragged Android to date. In the last generations of Galaxy, there is no trace of this solution, which did not really end the problem, but it paved the way for uploading better photos and videos on the networks.
Self-repairing mobiles
The LG G-Flex had the first solution to repair your rear bike yourself. This has been achieved through a poly-resin that has been automatically expanded to cover small scratches in seconds. It’s not a solution for big bumps, but it is for small daily messes.
Ingenious and useful solutions which, unfortunately, fell through. We would like to know if you are missing more or what technologies from a few years ago you would like to see again.
