Foldable mobiles have given us back a comfort lost in smartphones

When I started this series of foldable mobile articles which I hope will last a year, it was clear to me that one of the first issues would be the price of these dual screen smartphones. But it was also clear to him that another issue to deal with ASAP was comfort. I should clarify that this applies to foldable phones like the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3, a terminal which when opened is normal, but when closed it is much more compact and easier to store.

Let’s go back more than two decades

Mobile ads have changed a lot since their invention. This is normal, they were created for a purpose and now they are used for a lot of things.

However, there is one ad that stuck with me in 1999 when it aired on television. It is the advertising spot of the mythical Nokia 8210

As you can see, the mobile only appears at the end, emphatically pointing out that it was right under your nose and you hadn’t even noticed it. It is questionable whether doing capoeira with a cell phone in your pocket is risky or not, but it is clear that nowadays no one would dream of doing that with a current mobile.

This device was the culmination of a trend that the industry was trying to bring to its ultimate consequences: the miniaturization. It was clear seeing the Nokia catalog: the smaller a mobile, the more expensive it was.

The smartphone has changed everything

Already at that time, Nokia had smart devices, the Communicators, which were much bigger and heavier. What we did not imagine, at least me, is that two decades later we would be with mobiles with diagonals of almost 7 inches and that many times they disturb the pocket.

I am a tall person, almost six feet, and I wear not particularly tight pants. Despite this, having a cell phone in your pocket is uncomfortable while driving or in a suit, for example.

It seems to have been standardized, using suspenders or bags, but there was a time when it wasn’t, as we saw in the video.

The pleats bring back comfort

In the two weeks that I have been using the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 as a personal mobile, I have realized that I did not take it out of my pocket to leave it on the restaurant table when I go to eat on no occasion. The reason is simple: I don’t mind. Before, it was something very common.

The same thing happens when you are driving

Obviously, there are other folds, such as those that use the book format, which are not so comfortable, but even they contribute a lot in this regard, taking into account that to carry a screen with a similar diagonal it should carry a small tablet.

It will be difficult to refuse the comfort

I’m a home person, even work from home, but even so I saw the benefit of being able to fold the phone up and put it away instead of having it in my pocket.

When we have more options, with lower prices, and we will not have to do without this convenience to have a smartphone, it will be difficult for us to accept to move away from it.
