I’ve been using the Apple Watch since Apple released it in 2015. I remember testing the original Apple Watch during a 10k run and found it live a little in the future: A complete computer on the wrist with this screen and this quality was a discovery for my sporting life.
While trying the rest of the generations, I bought straps of all kinds: casual, for work and certain sports. Traditional sneakers are usually made of a material called Fluoroelastomer, designed to have some resistance to temperature, aging and daily use.
These are easy to clean straps. Normally, with a little soap and water, they will look new after every workout. However, sports wristbands made of nylon or polyester (those who went out with him Apple Watch Ultra original) they tend to get dirtier If we use them for sports, especially light colors. They can be cleaned with soap and water, but they don’t always look good and some stains are difficult to clean.
Mercadona’s magic eraser, an unexpected cleaner for braces
I’ve tried several tips and some have worked better than others, but the one I’m telling you about today is the one I definitely recommend the most. Not only because it is the simplest, It is also the cheapest. This is the “Magic Eraser” from Bosque Verde that they sell at Mercadona: literally $1.45 for the pack of three sponges ($0.484 per unit, not bad at all).
You don’t need anything else: the photos you see in this article They only needed two ingredients. A sponge of this magic eraser, and a bowl of water (if possible hot). On other occasions I have tried adding soap to the water (You can do this, for example, to add a softer smell when cleaned.) but the results are almost identical to those with hot water alone.
I really found this solution for chance: I found one of these erasers in the car after a sports session, and with a little water that I was carrying I wiped one of my straps. I was amazed at the resultespecially considering the fabric: it was the Apple Watch Ultra strap (Naranja Loop Alpine, $99 in the Apple Store), polyester.
How to clean the Apple Watch band with the magic eraser
As I mentioned, you only need one of their sponges, and a bowl of hot water. You can put a cloth under the strap to be able to rub it well, and prevent it from moving or scratching your worktop or table thanks to the titanium closure.
Wet the white end of the eraser and squeeze it until it no longer drips. Afterwards, rub in circles on the area to be cleaned, insisting until you start to see results. Depending on the time required, the embedded dirt will take more or less time, but it usually only takes a few minutes at most.
My advice is that before finishing, let it dry a little because water can be mistaken for dirt, and only when it is a little dry can you see that everything is correct. If you continue to notice dirt, always insist in circles (In my tests, this worked better than top-to-bottom or right-to-left only). No need to tighten a lot or use a lot of force.
When you’re done, wet the pink tip a little and give it a few gentle movements: this will remove any residue it remains a project. Don’t worry if the eraser disappears, as it is used it is consumed, as you can see in the photos. Then you let it air dry and get it ready for the next adventure.
This can also be part of maintenance
You can also use it as part of the interview When you come back from training, without having to scrub too much, it looks superb and like new. Like I said, although it’s not necessary, you can add soap to scent the bracelet if you want. When testing the photos in this item, no soap of any kind was used and you can see the results.
After cleaning, let the strap dry outdoors if possible – better than with a tumble dryer.
I have been using it like this for several months and the straps are like new: especially that of the Apple Watch Ultra which filled with mud and dirt, even after several days it was removed without problem. The material holds perfectly and it will not fade or damage, as friction is very gentle on the material.
It works on any Apple Watch band you own, whether it’s official from the brand or from a third-party manufacturer. The interwoven fabric straps are where this use will be most appreciated, although they works perfectly on silicone ones
The result is impeccable, and something like this is essential to maintain our Apple Watch bracelets
My experience with several months of use: all my straps are perfect with this system. A recommendation: don’t wait for dirt to accumulate on it, give it a gentler minimum maintenance with an eraser or with water or soap, which will facilitate the use of this process when necessary (or may even prevent it from being necessary). Keep this in mind, especially during the warmer months of the year.
Update: an even better and more hygienic finish
As new update of this article, I add a supplement which was also very useful to me as an epilogue to the belt cleaner that I mention in this article. And when using the Apple Watch Ultra 2 while diving, the band coming into contact with salt water was more difficult to clean.
To clean it more thoroughly, eliminate odors and even better disinfect it, I used a product that I already use regularly at home: cleaning vinegar diluted with a little water. Immerse the bracelet after passing it with the magic eraser, leave it to act for about 15 minutes then rinse it very well with water.
As you can see in the photo above, despite heavy use in sports – which started with the review of the Apple Watch Ultra 2 – it remains impeccable, clean in all aspects (the photo is from today) and ready for new adventures. East a method that complements the one I put forward in this articleif we need a perfect finish.
