Gemini

Important changes are coming for the most used map applications: Google Maps will rely on Gemini to completely renew its recommendations and suggestions system. Because you can ask the application directly: Google Maps will suggest places naturally and relying on the ratings of other users.

Google has been training artificial intelligence for years, but it has lagged behind when it comes to making it available to the user. And now it’s fighting back by including its AI everywhere: Gemini finds itself from Android to Gmail; via Google Maps and Google Earth, two platforms on which it will arrive soon. They just announced it.

Google has announced a number of new features for its mapping platforms, including Waze. And all of this is more or less linked to Gemini, its multimodal language model. Because, if we can request recommendations and directions in natural language, why not take advantage of this mechanism to integrate it into cartographic applications?

As the company announced, various changes to improve the experience of finding places, recommendations and walking tips using Inversive View are coming soon. In fact, Google claims to have significantly updated this view; combining AI, imaging and computer vision.

The upcoming changes to Google Maps and Google Earth are as follows:

  • Inspiration assisted by Gemini. Google Maps incorporates the company’s AI to locate places related to your tastes. You can ask Maps and get on-demand recommendations based on opinions and ratings left by users.
  • Improvements to guided vehicle navigations. Google Maps makes it easier to find points of interest on a route, introduces better lane visualization on the map, makes road signs more visible, and adds information about weather incidents.
  • Updated immersive augmented reality view. Immersive View reaches more cities and now includes new categories, such as college campuses. It also offers a new level of detail in routes, adding parking instructions and warnings for difficult turns.
  • Generative AI in Google Earth. The global mapping platform will allow urban planners to query Gemini on questions related to place. This option is aimed at professionals.

The news will arrive on Google Maps as well as Google Earth in the coming weeks and months. The Expanded Immersive View will be available this week for Android and iOS.
