At the time, NFTs became a craze on the internet, and in a very short time almost every tech company had some kind of project related to this technology; even Instagram came to have NFTs, and they were also integrated into web browsers like Opera.
However, this phenomenon did not last long, and throughout 2023 many of these companies jumped ship and embarked on what is now a sensation, artificial intelligence. As a result, many blockchain-based projects have been stopped and NFTs have lost a lot of value; A recent study found that the NFTs of the apes, the “Bored Apes”, went from millions of dollars to just tens of thousands, and the value of the associated cryptocurrency fell by 93%.
Therefore, it is striking that Google has decided that the time has come to bet on NFTs; or at least that’s what it seems with the new google play ruleswhich must be followed by all the Android applications available in the official store that are preinstalled on most current mobiles.
NFT and Google Play
One way to interpret the new policy, which goes into effect on December 7, is that Google is finally seeing the potential of NFTs; but another point of view is that the company wants avoid potential abuse associated with this technology, and has imposed serious limitations on what can and cannot be done, directly prohibiting the most abusive practices that have been seen on the Internet.
The new rules allow NFT-enabled apps to be offered on Google Play, and the company says that feeling “excited” to see new experiences creation that will grant this permission. Among the applications that will be able to take advantage of this change are games that allow users to purchase items using the “blockchain”, such as unique weapons or in-game pets; Apps that present rewards to users in the form of unique NFTs will also be allowed.
However, the rules also expressly prohibit certain types of applications based on NFT which have some success on the Internet, but which will not have a site in the official store. For example, NFT-based betting applications are absolutely prohibited, so, for example, an application will not be able to ask us for real money in exchange for winning virtual items such as NFTs whose real value is not unclear, nor will we be able to obtain NFTs using the so-called ‘loot boxes’, whose content is random. Although the sale of NFTs is allowed, the real value must be clearly displayed, and it can never be random.
It remains to be seen what the real effect of these new measures will be. Google Play may be full of apps with NFT, or nothing will change at all because Google is too late for the party.
