From time to time, Google surprises us with the announcement of the closure of another service or another platform. We have the most recent example with Google Podcasts: since the beginning of this year it is no longer available and users will have to migrate to YouTube Music or streaming applications. podcasts from third parties, such as Pocket Casts.
Google’s tendency to shut down services and platforms that don’t work as the company intended is no secret. In fact, there is even a website called “Killed by Google” where one can view all the services shut down by the company. Although there are some very popular platforms (like Google Podcasts, Google Domains or Google VPN), there are other lesser-known services.
Google’s graveyard continues to grow
The latest application to join the list of tools closed by the company is “Stack: PDF Scanner by Google”, an application for scanning and organizing documents from your mobile that we were already talking about a few years ago. As the company indicates, demand It will stop having support on September 23.
The reason why Google decided to terminate this application is that The main functions of the application have been integrated with Google Drive: Currently it is possible to use the Google Drive application to easily scan documents and organize them in our Google Drive account.
To facilitate the transition, Google is making the application available to users a tool to export documents which we had stored in Stack on Google Drive. It is possible to find this option within the application settings by going to Account > Settings > Export all documents to Drive.
Once the previous steps are completed, all documents stored in the application will become available in Google Drive: they will appear in a folder named “Stack”. If you want to export a single document, it is possible to do so from the “Share” menu which can be accessed when opening the corresponding document.
Looking back, “Stack: PDF Scanner by Google” appeared within Area 120 (the company’s project incubator) and in 2021 we were already talking about the uncertain future of this application. The reason is that many of Google’s experiments end integration into other company servicesas was ultimately the case with Stack.
At this point, it’s worth noting that Stack had some very useful features. For example, it was able to find and display key elements of our documents, such as the amount or date on an invoice. The app was only available in the US, although it was possible to install it in other countries using the corresponding APK.
