For the first time since its creation, Google could be in trouble. The massive layoffs announced today by Alphabet are a sign that something is wrong with the company, despite it remaining the industry leader.

The problem is that it may cease to be. Although Google has pioneered many technologies that are common today, it has been advanced by the right when it comes to Artificial Intelligence, and the concern in the directive is not to react in time.
The founders of Google are back
The launch of ChatGPT was Google’s biggest success to date. OpenAI has succeeded in creating a human-looking Artificial Intelligence capable of answering any question; It doesn’t always get it right and actually fails more than it looks, but the bottom line is that this is the first time the average user has had access to something that “looks like” an AI and its great potential.
If ChatGPT is integrated with the Bing search engine and applications like Word, Google may have a serious problem on its hands; Microsoft would be the big beneficiary, having invested billions in OpenAI in recent years.
If Google wants to beat a browser with built-in ChatGPT, it may have to completely reinvent itself. And for that, what better than to bring in those who invented it, must have thought Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google.
As revealed The New York Times, Pichai turned to Larry Page and Sergey Brin for help. The two Google founders announced their departure at the end of 2019, leaving Pichai at the helm of Alphabet after his good work in the Chrome and Google divisions. Although they never completely left the company and are still the main shareholders, they did not participate in its daily activities and devoted themselves to their projects and their personal lives.
That changed last December, when Pichai invited them to a meeting with other executives to decide the future of google and its Artificial Intelligence projects; the meeting took place just a month after the launch of ChatGPT.
It’s unclear at what level Page and Brin were involved, but what is clear is that Google has changed its policy on Artificial Intelligence. Until now, development had been slow as a “precaution”, but the arrival of competitors forced the company’s hand.
According to the same leak, Google is preparing a public demo of a chatbot which will use Artificial Intelligence to answer our questions in a human way. The difference compared to ChatGPT will be that it will give more priority to the veracity of information and the elimination of misinformation in the answers.
