When Apple Intelligence was presented at the last WWDC 2024, it took us little time to discover the fine print. For a child, its compatibility with iPhone will be much reduced, in addition to the fact that it initially reads in English from United States with the idea of extending it to other languages, but it will last until 2025. Without embargo, it feels like a fresh water bottle What Apple had doubts about its implementation in Europe as a result of the new Digital Markets Act (DMA).
The good news concerns this last limitation, since the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States have published a joint statement with which This allows Apple to implement the big news which will bring iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS 15 Sequoia. And no, it won’t just be about AI, but also other features that were likely going to be blocked.
The United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union, together for a good cause
In the aforementioned statement released by the main parties involved in the arrival of Apple’s AI in Europe, Apple was not literally named. Nor any other company. However, it is understood that it is addressed to any company, including of course the Californians and even Meta, which have also been limited by European laws.
The statement addresses several points with which It is expected that there will be equal competition between AI market players and encourage innovation. And while there are still a few points to finalize, this seems to be the first green light for Apple Intelligence to land on European soil. The four organizations that signed the declaration commit to working together to achieve the goals.
It is recalled that shortly after the presentation of Apple’s AI, at the Europe Forum, Commissioner Margrethe Vestager criticized the Californian company for limiting its innovations to the old continent. Something that seemed contradictory at first glance given the restrictions of the DMA, but which already indicated that they would seek some kind of agreement to favor their entry.
The main dilemma Apple (and others) have with DMA is how subjective it is in many ways.
And the DMA is full of doubts. Not so much because of its intention to promote competition, which, despite its detractors, is something logical to a certain extent, but rather because leaves many legal loopholes and companies like Apple have obvious doubts about implementing their innovations.
It should be noted that in the case of Apple There is one additional novelty that could be a good indication of fair competition.
The new Mac is also expected to arrive in Europe
In addition to the news on artificial intelligence, there are other features recently announced by Apple that could end up arriving thanks to this opening of the European Union. The most interesting of all is the one that has finally been the new star feature of the new macOS which will arrive this fall.
We refer to the call “iPhone Mirroring” and this basically allows us to completely control the iPhone from the Mac on the sole condition that the iPhone is under the same Wi-Fi network. It doesn’t matter if it’s locked or in another room.
This feature already appears in the public and developer betas of macOS 15. Its icon appears even on Macs that are located in the European Union, although when you tap on it, the regional restriction notice appears. It must therefore be used with a US Apple ID. Fortunately, if we follow this path in accordance with Europe, this function will eventually reach everyone.
This, yes, the dates are not yet known. Regarding Apple Intelligence, rumor has it that something could be advanced in the beta versions this summer, although it is still doubtful that they will reach the final version in September. The normal thing according to the information we currently have is that it ends up arriving at the end of the year or at the beginning of 2025 in English from the United States and that in the following months it opens up to other languages and, of course, arrives in USA and other European countries. Regarding the “iPhone Mirroring”, it could debut at the same time worldwide.
