Honor was one of the protagonists of the first day of Mobile World Congress. He presented his new flagship productthe extraordinary Honor Magic6 Pro, a full-fledged top of the range which does not come alone: the hardware is only the basis of renewed software with Artificial Intelligence functions.
Thus, MagicOS 8, the new version of the customization layer from the Chinese manufacturer, gains new capabilities such as Magic portal, features reminiscent of Google and its “Circle to search”. This is Honor’s AI.
MagicLM is Honor’s language model
It seems that Honor’s new operating system is already ready after a few months of testing. Starting with the most recent version of Google’s operating system, Android 14, it wants to conquer the user with magic tricks, yes, with artificial intelligence. In MagicOS 8.0 it debuts MagicLMthe firm’s language model, optimized for the Qualcomm chip.
According to Honor, it is capable of “interpreting and analyzing a series of different modes of interaction”, ranging from text to voice, among others. For example, locate specific frames in a video depending on the query we ask.
Next comes the crown jewel: the Magic portal, a function that automates what the user wants at any time. Honor wants its UI to be intent-based, allowing the operating system to present us with options before our actions. This is better understood with the example: we receive a notification of an event, the mobile takes us to the calendar application to create a reminder.
This is not the only thing it brings to the Honor software: we will see recommendations for shortcuts to our applications, everything context-based. Multitasking is enhanced with features like touch and drag to move text or images from one app to another. This is partly reminiscent of Google’s proposals which, with Lens and the new “Circle to search”, have caused quite a stir in recent weeks.
A chatbot without an Internet connection
Likewise, Honor’s show of force includes Llama 2: this language model works locally on the Honor Magic6 Pro, and it is so useful that it will answer our questions without needing to be connected to the network. We’ll soon see how far this goes and whether it works optimally on the device.
Continuing with the new features of MagicOS 8, we have the Magic Capsulewhich, as you probably think, is an adaptation of the dynamic island iPhones. On Android we have seen it from other manufacturers like Realme, so it seems that the idea is catching on and users like it.
With these arguments, Honor approaches Google with a certain speed while tracking Samsung’s proposal. The Galaxy S24 and Galaxy AI made a splash, but neither can be left behind here. The manufacturer Magic also knows how to follow trends, it cannot let this opportunity pass.
