This is the first thing that ages on an iPhone: its battery.. And that’s not Apple’s fault, but rather battery technology itself, which has evolved at a much slower pace than electronic devices. We have real computers in our pockets, but with batteries that have barely changed in decades.
This is why many people consider changing the iPhone battery. Now: how much can it cost? We will see Battery pricing details based on which iPhone you own. Although I tell you: changing an iPhone battery costs much less than buying a new one and is recommended to extend its lifespan.
When should I change my iPhone battery?
Batteries, over time, deteriorate and lose their original capacity. iOS 17 can show you your iPhone’s battery health status from its settings, just follow these steps:
- On your iPhone, open the Settings app.
- Click on “Battery”.
- Click “Battery Health & Charging”.
- Take a look at the percentage shown in ‘Maximum capacity‘:
Officially, Apple considers that a battery should be replaced whenever this maximum capacity percentage is 79% or less. You can also consider it if this percentage is higher if the iPhone has been charged more than 1000 cycles. iOS will tell you with a warning the recommended time to change the battery itself.
Where to change an iPhone battery?
The most advisable is of course to go to an Apple Store or an authorized business center where certified personnel use official parts to change it. Generally the process requires a reservationso that the change is as quick as possible and they can keep the necessary parts for you.
You also have the possibility to change the battery yourself following the official Apple program, although we have already warned that you save practically no money and the process is longer and more complicated. I don’t recommend it for general users at all.
I also advise against going to an unauthorized center that does not use original partsbecause these can cause errors and problems with the recognition systems of the internal parts of iOS.

iPhone models that do not appear in this table (iPhone 6s and earlier ranges) already have the official battery change service. Please note that if you go to an Apple Authorized Service Center instead of an official Apple Store, These prices may change depending on the establishment. We should also not forget about the AppleCare+ plans: if you have purchased one of these warranty extensions, the battery change will be free.
How long does it take to change iPhone battery?
It depends on each store, but if we go to an Apple Store or an authorized technical service, the process should not last more than three hours. During this time, you find yourself without a phone, so let your family and close contacts know beforehand, just in case.
Now, at some point, this process may take longer depending on the volume of work of the technicians. This is why ordered reservations have priority, but I still recommend that you be patient after returning your iPhone to have the battery replaced. It’s better that they do it well and not do it quickly.
Finally, my usual recommendation: It’s best not to get overwhelmed for your battery performance. If you want your iPhone to last 4 years or more (which I encourage you to do), at some point you’re going to have to do that, no matter how well you take care of the phone. The iPhone should make your life more comfortable, not harder.
