Apple will implement a new type of button on the side of its iPhone 15 Pro models.
Rumors about the next generation of Apple smartphones that have been circulating online for a few months suggest that the company is considering removing the physical volume control buttons from the iPhone 15 Pro in favor of a small unified dashboard with pressure sensitivity and/or touch gesture support.
In fact, the volume control layout of the iPhone 15 Pro has even been revealed thanks to some makes inspired by the CAD files of the original prototype. We know the design change, we know the possible reasons for the button replacement and we know what it will look like, but… How will the new iPhone 15 Pro volume controls work?
These will be the new buttons of the iPhone 15 Pro
The physical buttons on the side edge of the iPhone 15 Pro will disappear. They will cease to be moving components to become static panels with haptic functionality. This type of functionality was already present in the home button of the iPhone 7 and the volume control of the iPhone 15 Pro will work in a very similar way.
iPhone 15 Pro volume control panel rumored will mimic real pressure with small vibrations when we use it and it will continue to be active even if the iPhone 15 Pro is turned off thanks to the terminal’s microprocessor.

My latest investigation indicates that the volume button and power button of two new high-end iPhone models iPhone 15/2H23 may adopt a solid-state button design (similar to the home button design of iPhone 7/8/SE2 & 3) to replace the physical/mechanical button design.—Ming-Chi Kuo (@mingchikuo) October 28, 2022
How the new volume controls work
The operation of the new “no buttons” for the volume of the iPhone 15 Pro will be possible thanks to the implementation of more taptic motors on the device. They will help provide a similar feel to when users press a physical button and will be located on the left and right sides, between the hardware components.

In the wake of the most reliable leaks, Apple would test different methods for the volume controls of their first iPhone 15 Pro models.
The first method would consist of a panel support for touch gestures which would offer the ability to swipe over it to control the audio volume at a higher or lower speed, depending on the movement of the finger.
On the other hand, the second method would be based on a touch control which recognize or identify different levels of pressure to adjust the device volume. In this way, it would be possible to adjust the volume more quickly thanks to more intense pressure.

Finally, there was concern that the new volume control panel does not work well with the use of gloves or blankets for iPhone 15 Pro. But, apparently, Apple will implement a config parameter which allows you to customize the sensitivity level of this volume control. This could be a process similar to the Touch ID setup process.
But there is even more…
Apple plans to introduce yet another small change to the side of its iPhone 15 Pro. In theory, the company with the bitten apple logo will also replace the iconic mute switch with a multifunctional button.
It will be a button similar to the action button on the Apple Watch Ultra and could offer a wide range of functions related to the operating system of the iPhone 15 Pro:
- sound mute
- do not disturb mode
- rotation lock
- Screenshot
- screen recording
- turn on the flash
- low power mode
- Activar Accessibility
- launch a shortcut
- Open Control Center
- Open notification center
- Other accessibility features
We hope the rumors come true and Apple changes this a bit. continuous design much criticized on their iPhone 15 Pro with the replacement of these buttons on the side. Admittedly, we’ll miss the classic sound switch, but we think that space can be put to much better use. Also, many times iPhone users accidentally mute the sound with this little switch.
