Connected cars are becoming more common and it is increasingly common to have to pay a subscription to be able to maintain this connectivity, as for example Tesla does with Premium connectivity. Yes, there is a free one, which will last for the first 8 years, after which we will have to pay for the paid version.
However, there are many things we can do just by giving the car internet from our mobile or from its application, especially if we have an unlimited tariff. Many cars have the ability to connect to WiFi networks, which we are going to use to link it to our mobile. But once bound what we want is for it to connect automatically, without having to look for the icon in the menuswithout having to activate the WiFi Hotspot option on the mobile, etc.
To perform this automatic action we will have to download a free application from the Google Play Store called Tasker. iOS makes it easy for iPhones to do this with shortcuts, but on Android, we still need third-party apps. There are other third-party apps that let you do something similar, but this is the most reliable. We will use the Bluetooth connection as a WiFi connection activator, so whenever the mobile connects to the car via Bluetooth, it will connect to the mobile’s WiFi and turn off when we turn off the engine.
How to connect the car to WiFi
The steps to follow are simple, although Tasker’s interface doesn’t help. If the instructions are followed, in less than 5 minutes we will have the automatic connection of the car to the mobile WiFi on start-up and, in addition, the disconnection on departure. The first thing we need to do is create the tasks:
- We open Tasker.
- Let’s move on to the second column, called Tasks.
- Click the + icon in the lower right corner.
- We put a name, for example HotSpot ON.
- Click the confirmation icon.
- We select the Network option.
- We select the option WiFi access point (thether).
- In the Set option we select On.
- We click return twice.
- We return to the second column, Tasks.
- Click the + icon in the lower right corner.
- We give a different name to the second task, for example HotSpot OFF.
- Click the confirmation icon.
- We select the Network option.
- We select the option WiFi access point (thether).
- In the Set option we select Off.
- Click back once.
- Still in the task edition, click again on the + at the bottom right.
- We select the Network option.
- We select the WiFi option.
- In the Set option we select On.
- Double click return
Once the two actions that we want the mobile to perform have been created, activate the WiFi access mode and deactivate it (reactivate WiFi so that our mobile can connect to home networks), we must create the profiles. To do this, we follow these steps:
- We open Tasker.
- Let’s move on to the first column, called Profiles.
- Click the + icon in the lower right corner.
- We select the State option.
- We select the Network option.
- We select BT connected.
- We put the name of the bluetooth device of the car (we can look at it in the bluetooth parameters of the mobile).
- We click back.
- We select the Hotspot ON option.
- We left based on the profile we just created.
- We select Add output task.
- We select the Hotspot OFF option.
- Click on the confirmation mark at the top right, next to the magnifying glass.
Once done, we can go to the car, start it and see how when the bluetooth of the mobile is connected to that of the car, this function is also activated, which allows the car to connect to the WiFi of the smartphone.
