We still don’t have a working digital wallet on our mobile phone or an ID that we can store there, but we can interact with the card using our smartphone. Download even the digital certificate registered in the electronic DNI: we explain the steps to take said certificate wherever you want.
The digital certificate is an electronic document approved by the National Currency and Stamp Factory (FNMT) which demonstrates the identity of the person who possesses it. There are several ways to request this certificate, although this is not necessary in itself: The DNI has an embedded digital certificate. And it allows you to read with your smartphone from version 3.0, distributed since 2015: you probably already have one.
The FNMT application downloads the digital certificate from the DNI to the mobile
With the official app of the National Mint and Stamp Factory, you can order the certificate online and receive it on your mobile phone, all for a fee. You can also install certification if you have previously requested it and even sign your documents to prove your identity. And there is a function that is really useful if you don’t want to struggle with paperwork or requests: allows the download of the digital certificate hosted in the DNI.
Without cables, without asking anything and simply by sticking your ID on the phone: This is the easiest and fastest way to download the digital certificate to your Android. We tested it and it works really well: the FNMT has achieved a sufficiently reliable application, it has a modern design and is extremely simple to use.
To download the digital certificate of the electronic DNI to the mobile, you must follow the following steps:
- Download the FNMT app from Google Play.
- Open the app and click “Request a digital certificate“.
- Choose the bottom option, “Reading DNIe”.
- Accept the FNMT terms and conditions.
- Write your email address. It is important that it is authentic, since you will receive the reviews there.
- Verify the process with the code that the FNMT sent you by email, accept the next step and enter the CAN code of your DNI. It appears in the lower right part of the front.
- It’s time to enter the ID card PIN. They should have given it to you in an envelope when you renewed your ID card at the police station. And be careful not to make mistakes: you have three attempts before the certificate is blocked.
- Now comes the decisive step: place the identifier under the phone until the NFC connection is established and do not move the card while reading is still active. This usually takes four or five seconds.
- If the reading was successful and the PIN code was correct, the process will be completed: confirm sending. The app will tell you that the digital certificate is in progress, but it will have already been downloaded to your mobile.
- Go to “Requests” and install the downloaded digital certificate on your mobile.
To access the certificate you downloaded, simply use a file explorer and navigate to the downloads folder: there you will have a document with a .p12 extension which you can use on other phones or even on your computer. To install it, you will need your identification PIN again.

With this process, you do not need to make a request or contact the administration, the DNI is the only thing necessary.
