How to free up space on a Mac or MacBook

free, Mac, MacBook, Space

To have more storage space on your Mac or MacBook you may be thinking of buying external memory, uninstalling programs from your computer or simply starting from scratch and formatting your machine in factory settings.

Now, did you know there are many other ways to win on memory cards? You'll find them all in this article: from sending trash to storing your documents in the cloud, by deleting duplicate files.

When all computers have hard drives, they allow us to have more space on our Macs, but with a solid car, despite some advantages, the capacity is very limited.

In addition, it is common to save high quality videos and photos, which take up a lot of space. Below we explain how to keep at least 10% of free space for your Mac to work properly.

Tip 1. Manage your free storage with macOS

With the release of the MacOS Sierra version of 2016, Apple introduced a new backup feature that lets you delete files from your Mac that you no longer need and transfer others to iCloud.

Although your computer will send you a warning if you run out of free space, we do recommend periodically checking how much you are not available to be surprised. These are the steps to follow.

1. Click on an apple icon on the left side of the toolbar and select the & # 39;About this Mac& # 39; From the drop down menu.

2. In a new floating window, make sure the etiqueta tag is selectedStorage& # 39 ;. The vertical bar represents your hard drive or SSD, which you will see divided into colors, corresponding to each category of files you have saved.

In our case, for example, we have 459.36 GB available. Also handled by the MacOS system itself, gigas used by other users, installed apps and others. You may have photos and music stored for you.

Tip 2. Activate the option of & # 39; Maximize Storage & # 39;

The best way to free up space automatically, so you don't have to worry about doing so, is to use the & # 39; Create Storage option & # 39 ;, which will delete the series and movies you have already seen and delete the attachments in your email.

That doesn't mean you will lose deleted videos and files, because your emails will be stored in your iCloud account and the series and movies you bought on iTunes can always be downloaded again.

1. Repeat the three steps shown in the previous section: go to & # 39;About this Mac& # 39; From an icon created with an apple in the toolbarStorage& # 39; Finally hit & # 39;Manage& # 39 ;.

2. In the same window, press the & # 39;Configure …& # 39; Which to see on the right of the option & # 39;Configure storage& # 39 ;. Confirm the action by clicking again on the & # 39;Prepare& # 39 ;.

Another useful way to get macOS to manage your storage is with the option to automatically remove the trash after unwanted files are collected there for 30 days.

Another function that lets you do MacOS is to review the content you have saved on your computer to delete what you no longer need. Although you can do it manually, we recommend using this option to ignore anything.

1. As mentioned in the first advice in the list, go to & # 39;About this Mac& # 39; By clicking the block in the top right corner again, it is labeled & # 39;Storage& # 39; Selected & # 39 ;, press the & # 39;Manage& # 39 ;.

Tip 5. Save your files to iCloud

The process of storing your files in your iCloud account is not as easy and quick as the previous one. Currently, Apple only offers 5 GB of free cloud storage, so if you want to do it fully you will have to pay for it.

In Spain – and in another Eurozone country – the following prices are: 50 GB of € 0.99 per month; 200 GB for € 2.99 per month; 2 TB for € 9.99 per month. On the other hand in Mexico, 17, 49 and 179 pesos are charged monthly.

1. To keep all your documents in iCloud, the first thing you'll need to do is follow the steps described in the first part of this article: select & # 39;About this Mac& # 39 ;, followed by & # 39;Storage& # 39; And & # 39;Manage& # 39 ;.

2. In the new screen, click & # 39;Save to iCloud …& # 39; So only the latest files are saved on your Mac and the rest are automatically saved in iCloud.

3. Now, you'll have the choice of whether or not to choose & # 39;Desk and Documents& # 39;, & # 39;Pictures& # 39; And & # 39;Messages& # 39; Selecting files from the folders you want to transfer to the cloud. Then give & # 39;Save to iCloud& # 39 ;.

4. To continue, you must sign in to your iCloud account.

The problem is that this includes the following: you can save download photos of all your Apple devices to your Mac. If you find yourself in this situation, it may be better to delete those images on your computer, even though they will continue in iCloud.

On the other hand, we find it wise to invest in any other type of external storage to keep all your photos in case you have more. This will prevent your devices from being filled in by hundreds of images.

Tip 6. Use another cloud storage service

If iCloud doesn't convince you, you should know there are others cloud storage resources, such as Dropbox or OneDrive, or you should know that, if you have an application installed, this will make your Mac hard drive faster.

That's because these services are automatically synced with your computer, allowing you to access their content in a folder on your Mac that is taking up space.

Now, fortunately, in both services you have the option to sync only certain files or folders, which will logically take up to a few gigabytes. On the other hand, you can also choose to access content only on the web.

Tip 7. Clean up photos and music

The first thing to do if you want to free up space on the device is to think of the files that stay in the gigas, such as your photo gallery. You need to browse, restrict those you no longer need and transfer those to another device.

Also, your iTunes library is certainly one reason why you lose your memory. This way, you have several options on how to proceed and continue to enjoy the beautiful music without having to touch your Mac space.

  • Copy original files from your iTunes library to an external device and configure iTunes to find them from now on. This trick can be useful for iMac users, but not so much for MacBook users.
  • Use networked storage to archive your songs and access them whenever your computer is connected to the NAS.
  • Subscribe to iTunes Match to access your music from any of your devices, even if you import songs from a CD. This plan is priced at € 24.99 per month by users in Spain.
  • Subscribe to Apple Music for € 9.99 per month or € 4,99 and € 14.99 if you're a student or family, respectively. This method allows you to access the entire Apple music library so you don't have to have song files on your Mac.

Tip 8. Empty trash manually

As we mentioned before, it's very easy to accumulate many files and files that we no longer need to trash. You can choose to delete them after 30 days or make them more often by clicking the "Pour" button.

Tip 9. Move the files to your download folder

Aside from trash, another folder that often takes up much unnecessary space is that of downloading, which is often overlooked more often than it should. Collects texts, photos and input files that you may not need.

In fact, we especially recommend deleting those files that allowed you to install the new program on your Mac. Also check the documentation, because in most cases they will only be duplicates.

Trick 10. Discard duplicate files

To make sure you really delete the files when you have more than one copy on your Mac you will need the help of the program that is designed for you, as is the case with Gemini 2, Declutter either Singlemizer.

There are several reasons why we collect duplicate files, however we have chosen the option to "Copy to iTunes Media files included in the library & # 39; in favor of iTunes, or because we have downloaded the file often.

Tip 11. Delete your email attachments

As mail program settings are automatically adjusted, the email attachments they receive are automatically saved in the & # 39; ~ / Library / email & # 39; on your Mac.

In Mail Settings, you can choose the option to have the attached files automatically removed from that folder once you have removed the email from the inbox.

Trick 12. Turn off background apps

As it may seem, shutdown programs that have been turned on for days and that we do not use or reset your Mac will occasionally help to have free space on your computer or laptop.

Applications create temporary data storage files that will be larger and larger as long as we have this program open. If you close them, these cache files will be deleted and you will recover the space they use on your disk.

Tip 13. Remove programs that you no longer use

Today, there are applications for everything and they are so easy to download that it is very common to compile applications on our Mac. That causes us to run out of space very quickly. But to restore memory, it will not be enough to turn off the program.

For all the apps we installed, there is another folder that has all the files you need to be able to work, but pushing them is not part of the cake. This will require the use of such cleaners App Cleaner either AppZapper.

Tip 14. See which other apps take up more space

If you have those programs that you know have gigabytes removed and that you no longer need them, it is also appropriate to use apps like GrandPerspective, DaisyDisk either CleanMyMac 2 to make a comprehensive review.

You can also do it easily without using the external program by simply following the steps below.

1. Go to folder & # 39;Macintosh HD& # 39; For the finder, then & # 39;Users& # 39 ;, to get it for you The icon has the shape of a house. You can use the shortcut by simultaneously pressing the & # 39; Shift & # 39;, & # 39; Command & # 39; and & # 39; H & # 39 ;.

2. Then use the shortcut & # 39; Command & # 39; and & # 39; F & # 39; search your files and, after clicking the En Class & # 39; button, select & # 39;Other& # 39; From the drop down menu.

3. Now you should have opened another window. Swipe down until you find an option & # 39;File size& # 39 ;. Select it using the box on the right side and click the & # 39;Agree& # 39 ;.

4. After deciding which information you want the file search process to process, you'll need to hit the & # 39; then select & # 39;is greater than& # 39 ;, Switch drive & # 39; KB & # 39; & # 39;MB& # 39; Also choose a file size, such as 100.
