Sony’s PS Remote Play service is nothing new. Since the introduction of the PS4, Sony has offered gamers a way to remotely access their consoles and play their favorite games from the screens of other devices.
Unlike other similar services such as the one Microsoft offers for Xbox One, it is possible to play your favorite PS4 or PS5 games from anywhere in the world, as long as you have a sufficient internet connection.
Although initially when the service launched its use was limited to PS Vita and PS TV devices, Sony evolved it so that PS Remote Play was also available for Mac, Android, and more recently iOS users.
Next, we’ll show you how to play PS4 and PS5 games on an iPhone or iPad, along with some tips for improving the streaming and watching experience.
How to set up PS Remote Play on iOS
The good news is that the configuration PS Remote Play on your iPhone or iPad has become a relatively straightforward process. All you need is your iOS device and access to your PS4 or PS5 console.
- Download and install the PS Remote Play app on your iPhone or iPad.
- On your PS4 / PS5 console, go to “Settings> Remote Play Connection Settings” and make sure the “Enable Remote Play” option is checked.
- Open the PS Remote Play app and sign in with your PlayStation Network account.
- The application will search for your console on the Internet; it’s a bit hit and miss. If you find it, you should be able to connect to the PS4 and play. On the contrary…
- If the app is unable to locate your console, go to “Settings> Remote use connection settings on your PS4” and select “Add a device”. It should show you a code on the screen.
- Tap “Register Manually” in the PS Remote Play app and enter the code displayed on your console.
- The app should be able to locate your PS4 / PS5 and start streaming.
Improve the viewing experience
You can now play the games from your iPhone or iPad. However, we are going to explain some concepts with which you can improve the general experience of streaming games.
Adjust broadcast settings
The first thing to do after setting up the connection in the app Remote play is to set the transmission in the “Settings” section. To do this, click on the gear in the top right corner of the app (before you start streaming) and click “Video Quality” for remote playback.
The default is standard (540p), and while it might be acceptable on an iPhone, you’ll definitely find that the quality can be improved if you’re using an iPad screen. If you want a clearer streaming experience, upgrade to 720p or even 1080p if you have a PS4 Pro or PS5.
Another aspect that you need to take into account is the internet connection, which while relatively slow at 540p, you will need a better connection both at home and wherever you are connected to get an experience. no latency at 720p or 1080p.
Besides adjusting the resolution, you can also adjust the frame rate from the settings menu. You can select a higher frame rate for a smoother gaming experience, but like the resolution, the higher bandwidth you will need.
Use an MFI driver
While you can use Sony’s official DualShock controller when using PS Remote Play on a PC or Mac, the same is not true for iOS. To avoid this, Sony created touchscreen controls to emulate the PS4 or PS5 DualShock.
As seasoned iOS gamers know, control schemes based on the traditional controller layout don’t translate well to touch, and it does here. In fact, the whole experience improves when using an MFI driver like SteelSeries Nimbus +.
It allows you to interact with your games in much the same way as with a DualShock controller. Take a look at the article on best accessories for PS5, with which the gaming experience is enhanced, be it controllers, headphones, charging bases and much more.
You should know that not all MFI controllers were designed with this in mind and therefore do not offer the variety of buttons needed to successfully map a DualShock controller.
For example, you may not be able to access the “Share or options” menu, or trigger an action that requires a touchscreen or L3 / R3 input. So while an MFI controller improves the experience, it’s not quite perfect.
