The quality of the photographs is paramount. When we take them with an iPhone 14 Pro or an iPhone 14 Pro Max, we have the possibility of obtaining a resolution up to 48 MP. A resolution that comes with a fairly considerable weight of the photograph in question. Something that luckily has a solution.
One of the reasons we have it in 48MP, apart from the unlikely possibility of having to print it in a very large format, is be able to crop and crop without losing detail. It is precisely for this reason that it is quite common for us to want to shoot in 48 MP, but, at the end of the post-production of the images, we consider reducing the size of all. This is where the Shortcuts app comes in.
A simple conversion and we reduce the size of the images by 10 times
It should be remembered that the Photos application applies non-destructive retouching. This means that if we take a 48MP photo and crop it, the app saves the original along with the cropping instructions, along with the resulting photo. If at some point we want to go back to the original version, we can do that. As interesting as this system is, since it guarantees the possibility of recovering a photo in the event of an edit that does not convince us, it also has an effect on the space occupied by our photo library in iCloud.
So the best way to reduce the weight of these images is to convert them to another format and delete the original file. With this we will retain virtually all the detail of the 48 MP in a much smaller file size. To perform this conversion we can use the application shortcuts and the one that we can download here.
Once we’ve added it to our shortcuts library, all we have to do is choose which album we want to save the shared images to. Then we can run it, select all the 48MP photos we want to slim down, and let the shortcut do its magic. At the end, It will ask us if we want to delete the original imagesto whom we will say yes.
Recall that the deleted images are saved in the “trash” of the Photos application, so in the event of an unforeseen event, we could recover them for 30 days. In the meantime, to confirm that everything is back to normal, we will have our photos taken in 48 MP with a much lower weight. Well, we can easily go from 85MB to around 4MB. And just as easy as doing a conversion with a little shortcut.
