As strange as it may seem, Some AirPods or any other model of headphones can be used to know how well we hear. By simply putting them on and using a certain tool we can carry out a complete hearing test to obtain clear information about the condition of our ears (always separating left and right).
It’s something that’s been done for a long time, but is gaining momentum now that Apple has turned the AirPods Pro 2 into certified earbuds. Of course, we emphasize that it is not necessary that you have this model of headphones, since there is also free apps created by experts
How to take a medical hearing test with AirPods
In some countries, it is already possible to carry out a medical hearing test with AirPods Pro.
What requirements must be met
- Have AirPods Pro 2 with updated firmware.
- Have an iPhone updated to iOS 18.1 or later.
- Living in the United States, as it’s the only country where the AirPods Pro 2 have been approved as “clinical grade hearing aids.”
Steps to perform the hearing test
- Put in your AirPods and make sure they’re connected to your iPhone.
- Go to “Settings”, enter the AirPods section and click “Take a hearing test”.
- Click “Start” and follow the instructions (basically, go to a quiet, noise-free place to concentrate).
- When the sounds start playing, tap the screen if you hear them.
- Repeat the process with each ear.
Once this is done, you will get insights into your hearing and you will also be able to check the report
Hearing test on iPhone all types of headphones
If you live outside the United States and/or have any model of AirPods or other brand headphones (even wired), you can benefit from the use of specialized applications. There is one to perform a hearing test on iPhone that is very easy to use. It’s called “Mimi Hearing Test”, it was created by experts and you can download it for free in the App Store.
- Put on your headphones and make sure they are connected to your iPhone.
- Open the “Mimi Hearing Test” app.
- Click “Start”.
- Follow the steps indicated on the screen (grant microphone access permissions, go to a quiet place, set the volume to at least 50%…).
- Select the headphones you are using from the list.
- Press “Start” again and hold the screen until you stop hearing the sound.
Once the test is carried out in both ears, you will receive the results immediately, letting you know the exact level of hearing you have in each ear.
