If you live in or around Madrid and use public transport in the area, you’re in luck. you can already recharge your Madrid transport card from your iPhone, without using the station’s machines. Let’s see how to get it.
Read, pay and recharge
To do this, we will need three things:
-
An iPhone with iOS 14 or later installed
-
The Transportation Card app, available for free on the App Store
-
Our activated Madrid transport card
If you open the app, you’ll see that it immediately asks you to approach the Madrid Transport Consortium physical map to the top of the iPhone:
When you do, the app will read the map for about a second, then its information will appear, including how many rides you have:
Click on ‘List of titles to reload‘ and then choose the travel bonus you want to recharge by clicking on ‘Multitrips’:
After this step, all you have to do is select payment method and confirm purchase. The map will automatically reload once you are done. If you don’t have a payment method in the app, you can add it by clicking the button with the horizontal lines at the top left of the screen.
This small breakthrough is a first step for other transport passes to join the trend: the next steps should be to imitate transport in New York or London and use Apple Pay directly or an integration with Wallet to be able to pay our tickets and subscriptions almost effortlessly.
