Apple Maps is an increasingly powerful option over the ubiquitous Google Maps, offering an alternative with more privacy and a neater interface. Now that we’re all on iOS 16, it’s a good time for you to try out the routes on these maps with a feature we tend to overlook too much: schedule it to leave or arrive at a certain time.
From A to B at a fixed time and covering all eventualities
Imagine that tomorrow you have to go to the main train station in Barcelona since you have to take an AVE to Madrid. The train leaves at 10:00 am and due to security protocols you should arrive approximately 25 minutes before. Therefore, you must be at the station by 9:35 a.m. But you live on, say… Avenida Meridiana, in the Sagrera neighborhood.
You’re going to take public transport, so you need to know what time you have to leave the house tomorrow. No problem: open Maps on your iPhone with iOS 16, and locate the Sants station in the search engine:
Click on the “Itinerary” button. You will see that a diagram appears with which you can create the route from your location to Sants station, even adding additional stops (we will simplify by omitting this option). If you are at home, you can leave this diagram like this. If this is not the case, click on “My location” to replace this information with your personal address:
Now click on the ‘By car’ option to change it to ‘Public transport’ (you will see that it already offers you a route) and above all: click on ‘Now’ to change the time at which you want to travel :
A calendar will appear to choose the date and time we want to pass. Click on ‘Arrival’, since what interests us is arriving at a specific time and not leaving at a specific time. Then in the calendar select the day you want and the time: 9:35 am following the example I mentioned earlier. When you’re done, click “OK”:
You already have it, all you have to do is select one of the routes that Maps offers you and follow their schedule to get to the station on time. The route also covers when you need to get around on foot, including transfers, and in the case of traveling by car, it also takes into account traffic jams by plotting the fastest possible route.
