Writing messages on WhatsApp is something we do every day and almost like a reflex, without thinking. But what we write is usually plain text with emojis and many don’t know we can add bold, italic or strikethrough text in WhatsApp chats. And you don’t need to look for the option in any menu to achieve this.
You don’t need anything else to write rich formatting in WhatsApp
It’s very simple and WhatsApp explains it well from its official support. When you write a message on WhatsApp, all you need to do is write a character at the beginning and end of the piece of text you want to f ormat in bold, italic or underline:
*asterisk* for bold
_underscore_ for italics
~tilde~ for strikethrough
”’three quotes”’ for monospaced text
If you do, you’ll see how WhatsApp’s own text box already tells you what format it’s going to apply:
Press the button to send and voila, the symbols disappear but the chosen format remains. If you know the Textile layout code, it’s exactly the same procedure. This way, you can highlight certain things in your chats so that recipients can see them more easily.
Another way to do this is to take advantage of the iOS format menu, although the size of the WhatsApp text box makes it a much more inconvenient option. Controlling it with characters will keep you from losing your temper.
