Not only have cell phone manufacturers been introducing smartphones with foldable screens to the market for several years, but they are also experimenting with different formats that go beyond the “book” type fold we see on cell phones today .
Huawei is one of the companies that wants to create different foldable phones; Concretely, the Chinese company is working on a foldable mobile phone in three parts, a format that resembles that of an accordion which allows the mobile phone to be used in three different ways. However, The development of the Huawei Tri-Fold encounters various problems. Basically, the display is so advanced that other components and software elements are not at the same level.
The two obstacles of the Huawei which bends in three: software and temperature
Currently, foldable cell phones available on the market are available in two formats: with a horizontal fold (clamshell or Flip type), and with a vertical fold (book or Fold type). Some manufacturers have already presented several interesting prototypes of screens. Plus, there’s the Motorola phone that can be rolled up like a bracelet, or TCL’s three-piece foldable phone.
As we mentioned, these are prototypes. However, Huawei is working on a three-part foldable mobile phone which the company hopes to launch on the market this year. However, its development has not been free of problems and challenges.
According to the latest rumors, Huawei has managed to create a three-part foldable screen to be used in three different ways: as a traditional mobile phone, as a small tablet with a 4:3 aspect ratio and as a large tablet with a 28:9 ratio. However, even if the screen is ready, the software that would be used on this device is not optimized.
Huawei uses the HarmonyOS operating system, based on AOSP, as well as its own application catalog. The software of this mobile phone is not yet ready, according to the leaker @jasonwill101 on X (Twitter), so The user experience on the triple screen is not yet optimal.
But the software is not the only obstacle to the development of this mobile.
The screen and general structure of the Huawei mobile phone that folds into three parts would be very thin, so that when folded and transformed into a traditional mobile phone, it would not be extremely thick. This assumes a temperature management and cooling problem of the mobile phone and its processor. This device is expected to feature a new Kirin 9000 series SoC, a series that itself is not as power efficient as newer chips from other manufacturers.
Therefore, Huawei’s Tri-Fold mobile could take longer to hit the market. However, we should not be surprised by Huawei’s commitment to the foldable mobile phone market; After all, more foldable devices are sold in China than ever before, and the leading brand in this segment in the country is Huawei, with a 37.4% market share of foldable mobiles in China during 2023, according to data published by IDC.
