Mobile photography has faced (and is still facing) several important pitfalls, especially the zoom and the lack of light. The zoom problem we are learning is based on the multi-camera system and low-resolution images, new imaging modes for night scenes.
After a mega-comparison of photos published in Xataka, on the Xataka Android we didn't want to be underestimated and took the opportunity to improveComparisons have focused mostly on nighttime trends for the best phones this year. Participants are Huawei Mate 30 Pro, Huawei P30 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro, LG G8s ThinQ, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+, OnePlus 7T Pro, Pixel 4 XL and Xiaomi Mi Note 10.
As we said in the earlier comparison, the reason for choosing two Huawei phones is that, although the Mate 30 Pro is the most up-to-date option, the fact of the lack of Google apps makes it a much smaller end and leaves the Huawei P30 Pro as the primary product logo in 2019. We also included the Mate because we didn't want to ignore the upgrades that included its camera. On the other hand, in this comparison it doesn't compete with the Sony Xperia 5 because it doesn't have night mode.
This is the night mode for each performer
Before we go in to check out the results, we pause to see how the nighttime mode of each smartphone participates in these comparisons. It is more accessible, more hidden, faster or slower. Let's look at what they give us.
Huawei P30 Pro and Mate 30 Pro
We start with two Huawei, whose night mode is followed in both cases. Here it should be noted that sometimes automatic shooting achieves the same or better effect than night mode, but we'll see that in a moment and pictures.
Night mode has its section in the mode carousel, between Opening and Parrait, as well easily accessible. When shot, a countdown will be based on the darkness of the incident (the less light, the longer it will take) and the message warning us not to go. It is not necessary to use a tripod, but it does not hurt if we make a good drive.
IPhone 11 Pro
The latest iPhone night mode is automated, that is, It only works when the camera app sees fit due to the weather conditions, we can not force it by hand. We know it's activated because it's shown by the night mode and weather icon in the upper left corner.
If activated, if it doesn't affect the display it will last for seconds you set it by default, but it can either increase it (to the point where the app leaves us) or disable the night mode altogether if we set it to zero. As in other models, the exposure depends on how dark the event is and you do not have to move your phone while shooting.
LG G8s ThinQ
The night mode of the LG G8s is called & # 39; Night View & # 39; and it's available in the drop-down & # 39; More & # 39 ;, so It is not particularly accessible, especially when we are in a hurry. Unlike other nighttime methods, shooting is very fast (this is reflected in the results) and does not require holding the cellphone for several seconds. Taking a paste, sometimes it is slow to save the picture.
Samsung Galaxy Note 10+
Samsung puts its night mode on the mode carousel and, as it is editable, we can take it to a place that suits us. The surgery is no secret: you are shooting and a warning is coming so you don't leave the phone for a few seconds until the image is saved. When requesting, we would like to see a countdown or some indication of the time remaining.
OnePlus 7T Pro
The Night Landscape is one of the options we have found in the OnePlus 7T Pro carousel, one on your right hand side. We don't have any configuration options available here, just shoot and wait for the exposure to end. It is amazing that in this model we can use it with a wide angle.
Pixel 4 XL
The Pixel was one of the first smartphones to have advanced night mode, one of which they almost never see in the dark. Night Vision improved a lot since it arrived on the Pixel 3 and one of the changes we're seeing now is that has its category, right after the photo route.
When we shoot the message & # 39; Don't leave & # 39; he appears with the finished wheel and tells us the remaining time of the shot. As an alternative, there is no need for a tripod but it is best to keep the cell phone as much as possible.
Xiaomi Mi Note 10
We finish with the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 and its night mode. We have no options to stop and can simply shoot and wait for the shoot to finish (showing time with a circle around the shutter button). In this case Exposure is usually much shorter compared to others.
Scenario 1
We start with the event with enough light coming from different sources and where a large body of water in the foreground holds prominence. The challenge here is over manage to keep the details in that color so complex that water creates, but without losing the background and white balance.
Being a conservative with enough light, we don't see much difference between automatic shooting and those made in night mode. Details are very marked in seconds, but it's not a big change as we'll see later.
The point of differentiation in night scenes like this is white balance. Here we see two clear features: those who have chosen a cool tone, such as the Huawei P30 Pro, LG, Pixel 4 or Xiaomi and which gives us a warm balance like Apple, Samsung or Huawei and Mate 30 Pro. Reality was the middle way.
Ideal and in terms of a strong distance, they represent the darkest and most light-sensitive areas, though here you have to provide Night Vision for Pixel 4 XL ear buds with a bit more imagery and you can better control the lights under the bridge. All in all, the result is excellent.
Everyone does a good job at the detail level in this case, maximizing the cut to 100% appreciates the most significant difference. Those who get worse when they release the growing glass with Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and LG G8s, while Huawei, Pixel and Xiaomi are highlighted.
Scenario 2
We continue with each other a beautifully lit space. In this case we have a marked difference between the palm trees and the ground illuminated by the lights that are placed around it, and the complexity of the detail level. Let's take a look at how they do it here.
Yet again, nighttime systems have no significant effect on the level of light, but when we look at that we appreciate information marked above in places such as land. However, it's not a big change and it makes us wonder if it's worth getting rid of at night and what it entails (long shot, we should avoid moving the phone) to sunglasses of this type when there is enough light. In any case, it's interesting to see how they respond to these "kind" situations.
White balance becomes an important point as well an additional difference between the models in question. Huawei, Samsung, OnePlus and Apple are betting on warmth and near what we saw on the scene (the headlights were quite yellow), while Xiaomi and, most of all, the Pixel was cold.
As for the details, just about everyone does very well when standing for the texture of the palm tree in the front. This is where we look down and see the difference. Huawei both get a lot of sharpness, but in retrospect the full effect is of the mold, especially in the case of Mate. Xiaomi is one of the best in this category, and LG and iPhone are in the background.
Scenario 3
We continue with the outdoors, but things start to get complicated by the lack of light. We have one more dimmer light because the light sources were very different, and created a marked difference that explores the dynamic range. The texture of grass is another challenge. Will they get it?
When light falls, the difference between automatic shooting and those of nighttime methods is widened in most cases, though Huawei still has a very powerful automatic
At the white balance level there are still some things that are inconsistent, but not marked as in the previous scenes. Amidst the warmth is still the iPhone 11 Pro, although it does not cost much, and is now the replacement of Xiaomi Mi Note 10. On the other hand, Pixel and Huawei (especially Mate 30) are leaving neutral. As for the dynamic range, other than LG, some do quite well.
When we bring out the magnifying glass, the grass detail gives us a clear winner and none other than the Huawei Mate 30 Pro, closely followed by the P30 Pro. Looking at this bank, the details are more accurate.
Scenario 4
We turn to a photo taken indoors in a very strong light. It's a simple picture., for both light and light emanating, the only more complex area is that of the leaves of the plant. Let's take a look at how nightlife behaves here.
In the bright light, we also see that nighttime routes have no visible effect when looking at a normal flight. When its usefulness is greatly appreciated up to the leaves of the plant, sharp in the picture on the right in most cases. The special call on the iPhone is that, although it didn't work in night mode, it achieves the most balanced effect of its automatic shooting.
White balance is also a matter of tension, but there seems to be no equal practice in all scenes. Here The Mate 30 Pro is the coolest one that leaves the picture, while the P30 and iPhone are much warmer. LG is left with lightning in the light, leaving behind the darkest image.
In detail the thing is very close and everyone gets a good explanation. Pixel, Xiaomi and Mate 30 are outstanding, though not entirely.
Condition 5
The next incident was also taken internally, however conditions were more complex. The room was dark except for the light of traffic lights that went through the window. Here the night lanes had the opportunity to shine more in light of where they were not. They work as follows:
In complex cases like these, the effect of nighttime routines is greatly appreciated moreover, the light is greater. Nearly everyone is able to brighten up the room, much to their surprise in the case of Huawei and Pixel, while Xiaomi, Samsung, OnePlus and especially the iPhone are betting on a more natural look. LG has very little effect and the two images are the same.
The Mate 30 Pro also offers a slightly cooler image compared to its brother, the P30 Pro, which is much warmer (though not so much for the iPhone). The light of the lights was very yellow A certain warmth is a must here.
Those who represent the details in this shot, and also very different from the others, are Huawei and Pixel, followed by the iPhone. Some fail to properly describe the leaves of the plant, sometimes even appearing as Xiaomi Mi Note 10.
Scenario 6
We go outside again, this time to find a place in the best light when something new works: movement
Again we have more light and the difference between night and automatic mode is greatly reduced in all cases. Where there are some major differences in the motion of each image, with more blurred features in night mode especially in OnePlus and Samsung. In the case of the Pixel, it's almost as strong as the cars despite the long exposure.
At the white balance level, we see that the best magenta seems to be gone on the Huawei Mate 30 Pro and, in a nutshell, on Samsung and iPhone. The most accurate measurements are made by the Huawei P30 Pro, though the light goes up slightly. The Pixel 4 bet on a standard cool look but raises the light without being too old. Of the streetlights, the most contained are the iPhone, as well as the LG and P30 Pro.
When we go to the cutting areas, there is nothing wrong with representing information. It boasts the Pixel, which in addition to providing a lot of sharpness in the front, and has been able to keep it in the mountains far away.
Article 7
And we end with the image, but not the image taken in display mode, but like everything else: it starts automatically and then night mode. The scene had enough light but it didn't come directly to the face, it created some shadows that could be taken The challenge of processing. Let's see how.
To not give up the habit, the two Huawei are the ones that increase the lighting of the event, though the Mate 30 satisfies the colors more in front of the P30 Pro which leaves the image less refined, but sharp. Some are less bright, but in return they get a more natural and reliable look by shooting, especially the Pixel, iPhone and Xiaomi, although this gives us a very low contrast and the image is somehow indistinguishable. The OnePlus and Galaxy Note are also very efficient at the level of illumination, but they are extremely saturated.
In combination we see the contrast of light we talked about so clearly, LG that in this case gives us a darker image in night mode than usual. As for the white balance, there is a lot of consistency in this area too all representing the bright orange of street lights (with more or less saturation), or the Pixel accustomed to that cold balance removes it
If you look at the details, the Huawei P30 Pro and Xiaomi Mi Note 10 are out, followed by Pixel and OnePlus 7T Pro that go around processing. The iPhone does not appear well when it expands, not to mention LG and Samsung.
Choosing a battle winner in the dark
Night mode has become an almost essential function for any smartphone worth its salt, especially when it's high end. This is how we see it in this selection of terminals that include an option that focuses directly on night images, and has had very good results in some cases. Good choices have never been easier and in many cases we had to be guided by small details to make a difference. Also explain that we only vote based on the photo taken in night mode, because the comparison is just that. Here are the votes:

As we mentioned, sometimes the effects of night mode are very good, but in others they are always very green and this is reflected in our votes, where there are four models that run against the first three in almost every situation. Huawei and Google were the first products to bet on these types of modes and it shows in the results, with bright and sharp images.
Although we are dealing with eight, there are four types that are opposed to the first three in almost every case.
Xiaomi is also impressive with its Mi Note 10, but the remainder of the current one has to reap more. In the case of Apple, the arrival of night mode is more than welcoming and comes out pretty well in almost any situation, but when it comes to its competitors it paints them with the most yellow images and, most of all, possible details. Samsung's is back in more detail, and the OnePlus sins of the more structured and unique images. LG night mode slightly improves the shot (and not always), but it is far behind what others are offering. Yes, the white balance remains a pending issue even for those in senior positions.
This is our test after test, but we also want them to be the ones who choose the best inside a blind comparison we will publish shortly. As always, comments are open to us that we leave your comment.
