As some of you may know, I am a law student in addition to writing here every day. I have to admit that it’s sometimes a bit difficult to put it all together, but whatever you work a bit, if you like what you do, it’s not as hard as it seems, and like in my case I like both, it’s not that complicated as it might seem.
Law is a career in which you have to read a lot. The textbooks are numerous and huge, the sentences long, the laws endless — and what’s more, they change them every two weeks! —, and the exams, with few exceptions, are boring. However, technology can help us a lot in these cases, and today I want to tell you how I use Chat-GPT to make my life as a student a little easier. Of course, always within the ethical canons that must govern all students and professionals.
work with notes
Grades are an essential element in the life of any university student. It is, with the manual, what we are led to study. I want to refer specifically to the notes I take in class and not to the textbook, since I don’t use the latter with Chat-GPT. I understand that I did not write it, and therefore it would not be ethical. For that I stick only to my notes
When we take notes in class, they tend to be quite messy, or at least not as well as we would like. That’s why you have to clean them later. And GPT-4 helped me for that. It’s simple, once I take some notes, I copy and paste them into Chat-GPT, and I ask him to extract an index which will organize them at besteven if you have to modify the order and so on.
As soon as it’s done, I work with this index to clean up my notes and make them as neat, clear and concise as possible. In this way, then it will be easier to work them, learn them, understand them, and remember them on test day and in the future. I can do this with both my iPhone 14 Pro and my MacBook Air, so it’s even better.
prepare for exams
Perhaps the best application Chat-GPT can have for any kind of student is to help with exam preparation. It is a wonder. Once I’m done preparing the material for a specific exam, I copy and paste the topics into GPT-4 and ask it to ask me all kinds of questions: concept, development, multiple choice, etc. Moreover, if something is wrong, he corrects it for me, and He even gives me a mark out of 10 for each answer
It is also very useful for prepare small flashcards that help to better retain information. It’s as simple as copying and pasting the material, asking them to make flashcards of each, and studying the content. Then you can ask him to check if you know them by giving you only the beginning of each one and it is you who must complete them. If you fill them in correctly, it tells you, and if you’re wrong or don’t remember, it corrects you.
Jurisprudence search
Case law research is one of the most boring tasks for any lawyer. It consists of identifying the judgments that deal with cases similar or very similar to the one you are dealing with in order to use them as an argument in your situation
Chat-GPT does this well but only sometimes. It’s very good researching the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union, since his most famous cases are published on the Internet. However, this does not work in the case of USA. He can’t find it, and if he mentions anything, it’s a lie. However, as far as the European Union is concerned, that is fine. You pick up the file, you ask him for the case law and he finds it. From there, all you have to do is search the internet for the phrase, read it, study it, and see how it can be used.
Chat-GPT is a great tool. You have to be careful and follow strict ethical control which, although it may seem excessive, is necessary. It cannot be used to do an exam or a work, because then it is not the student who would be evaluated, plus it wouldn’t be fair to the rest of the classmates. However, for working with it, preparing material, revising for tests, etc., it is an excellent tool that we should all use if we find it appropriate and necessary.
