A young man quit his job on his first day. The reason? Not wanting to work 12 to 14 hours a day. And perhaps not so much because he didn’t want to make such an effort, but because he seriously doubted that these efforts would be rewarded. This is something that has not happened in USA, but it highlights something common to everyone and that also affects Apple.
Fortunately, things change. People born between 1997 and 2012, known as Generation Z, are entering the workforce making noise and demanding changes that benefit everyone. The example we presented is just one of the latest to illustrate this trend.
Not considering abuse at work as normal, the battle of the “Z”
As a young millennial and very close to Generation Z, I have noticed many times (more than I would like) how these generations are often nicknamed the glass generation and are even called lazy. As many others have surely seen, there is everything in this city of men, from tireless workers who dedicate hours and hours to their jobs to those who take advantage of the slightest opportunity to escape.
However, there is something that stands out from these latest examples: age doesn’t matter. There are hardworking and lazy people of all ages. Yes, on the other hand, it is true that these last generations are those who have the most They are pushing to end abuses already established as the norm in many companies. From considering it natural to have to work unpaid overtime, to being forced to participate in work WhatsApp groups with our personal number and to respond to requests outside of working hours.
The Z says enough. The case we explained in the introduction belongs to a story told on Reddit in which a young man describes a terrible and short work experience. And even before that, the situation seemed ugly, since to qualify for the position he had to pass two lengthy tests that together amounted to more than 80 hours of work. Unpaid, of course.
“Benefited” as a full-fledged worker, the young man remembers that on his first day His boss made fun of him for not wanting to work selflessly.. On that first and only day, he demanded an “unreasonable commitment,” consisting of working more hours than his schedule required and receiving nothing in return. Personal satisfaction, but nothing more. No days off, nor of course additional salary.
Apple is no stranger to all these problems
For several years now, at Apple the store workers strikes for, among other things, having abusive working conditions. In fact, she is immersed in a legal drama. In the absence of a court ruling, the company is under scrutiny for alleged violations of some of these labor regulations.
In addition to strikes, the company has also been hit by lawsuits. And while it is true that this is a delicate subject and that it changes a lot depending on the territory, it is in the United States that the company is having the most difficulty. That same year, he already had to reach agreements with workers to avoid going to court.
In any case, everything leads us to the same thing: fed up with new generations coming to change the standards. And here, even the most valuable company on the planet like Apple is not spared.
