At the end of August, in EL ESPAÑOL – El Androide Libre we had the opportunity to test the new Motorola Edge 50 Neo and 50 Pro, and today the day has come for another model in the series, the Motorola Edge 50. A mobile with Android 14 that stands out for several specifications such as its 6.7-inch pOLED borderless screen and a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom that allows you to obtain magnificent results.

The Motorola Edge 50 is available for purchase in Europe for 599 dollars in a single variant with 512 GB internal storage and 12 GB RAM. It is a cell phone that also has details such as its thinness, 7.8 mm, and the MIL-810H military certification to resist shocks, which means that you cannot worry if it falls, a more everyday circumstance than it seems.

An Android smartphone that stands out for its specifications, but which also lives up to its cameras, with an elegant way of understanding what photography from a mobile phone can be by prioritizing photos that capture the true color of the scene instead of oversaturating it.

Follow Motorola's lead with PANTONE colors: green and Fishing plush made of vegan leather and gray in color with a vegan velvet finish. The commitment to colors, as well as the scent of the box, has been common at Motorola for a few years.

The refresh rate is 120 Hz for smooth on-screen animations and games, and supports HDR10+ to enjoy multimedia content from series or films from Netflix and other platforms.

Motorola also did not forget to follow the current trend of including certain features for reduce SGS blue light and SGS motion blur which protects the user's vision. Many brands are starting to give it the necessary importance.

Basically it has the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip which, although it is a chip launched in 2022, does very well in different aspects like gaming, and even more when it is accompanied by 12 GB RAM memory; more than enough to multitask or open one app or another without any fear of performance loss.

Photographic performance

There are a series of aspects that clearly show that the Motorola Edge 50 is one of the most complete phones in this price range, but before detailing them we will comment a little on the camera specifications: 50 MP main lens with f/1.8 aperture, 10 MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and a 13 Mpx ultra wide angle. On the front, it mounts a 32 Mpx one with an f/2.4 aperture. with the ability to record 4K video.

His photography works very well in any environment or situation (although it also has its weaknesses), the zoom does a great job for sharp photos and a detail sometimes overlooked: he knows quite well how to choose the photo in which the subjects appear sufficiently sharp; not always, but in most cases.

The Moto Edge 50 with the main camera and automatic mode It works wonderfully in color balance to reflect the correct color temperature of the scene. Yes, on some less luminous photographs, we tend to use blue, but with the aim of making them more vivid.

And generally speaking, it is capable of capturing the lighting and color of the photo that the user is going to take. That is to say, it does not do much to “oversaturate” the color of a photograph unlike other manufacturers who seek to give this “pop” effect that stands out.

Another example to illustrate the work done to capture the tone of the photo is that of the sunset captures (visible in the photo gallery), where the sky is not dyed the same blue tone as other flagship phones They are used to this type of photos and it becomes a little tiring, because in the end all the photos look the same at certain moments with the same light.

With the Moto Edge 50, a clear tone is generated with a wider color spectrum than that take more beautiful photos at this special moment. This can be seen in the multi-zoomed photos of the sunset falling over the buildings in the background, with the yellow and orange colors coloring the clouds.

With a single tap on the sky or the darkest building, you can generates balanced contrast that neither darkens nor brightens the sceneso there is no need to touch the lighting slider in the viewfinder.

Of course it contains weak points as happens in digital zoom which can “watercolor” certain parts of photos, especially if they contain a lot of detail. But yes, you have to enlarge the photo to find this imperfection.

El gran angular hace un buen trabajo en la fotografía con poca luz en el atardecer cuando el sol ya ha desaparecido por el horizonte. Lo único que el deslizador de brillo de la escena es un poco brusco al ir reduciendo o aumentando el brillo.

Cuando llega la noche cambia un poco la historia con la fotografía, ya que en las fotos nocturnas, cuando hay un foco de luz potente, como puede ser el de cualquier farola, no es capaz de atenuarlo para dejar un quemado en esa parte de la toma. En este aspecto no es de los mejores móviles y comparado al mismo Pixel 8a puede flojear.

Capa personalizada

Motorola sigue inspirándose en la versión base de Android para la capa personalizada. Tiene sus cosas como en los ajustes rápidos para ubicar el botón de acceso de los ajustes en la parte inferior y cambia en algunos aspectos. Sobre todo el diseño de los botones de WiFi, Bluetooth o GPS que toman un gran espacio, similar a lo que uno podría encontrar en los Pixel de Google.

La capa personalizada sigue mejorando y tiene detalles propios como esos pequeños iconos de notificación en la pantalla de bloqueo que al pulsarlos muestran el contenido. El reloj se adaptará según la cantidad de texto de la notificación para dejar claro que la interfaz está bien cuidada y optimizada.

Incluye algunas funciones de IA como la generación de imágenes para el fondo de pantalla, con la que se puedan crear algunas simplemente únicas, eso sí, siempre que se inicie sesión con la cuenta de Motorola.

Rendimiento y autonomía

Los juegos como el nuevo Populus Run van de miedo, y aunque la calidad sonora no llega a otros móviles de Motorola, es aceptable para disfrutar de buenas partidas con sus altavoces estéreo y Dolby Atmos. Como se ha mencionado anteriormente, da soporte a HDR10+, así que para reproducir contenido multimedia es un móvil ideal, más si cabe con la pantalla pOLED que utiliza.

Si el chip de Qualcomm sale bien parado en muchas de sus facetas, también lo hace en la autonomía para optimizar el uso de la batería de 5.000 mAh del Edge 50; una cifra ya utilizada en muchos móviles y que permite una gran autonomía. En la carga rápida va con 67 W por cable y 15 W en la inalámbrica, así que en este aspecto cubre de manera sobrada para cargar rápidamente el smartphone.

En la autonomía el chip de Snapdragon logra un gran resultado gracias a su eficiencia energética y en el rato que salí para hacer unas cuantas fotos, ha dejado claro que hace un gran uso de los recursos para que la batería pase del 77 % al 67 % con un uso de 3 horas y 45 minutos del móvil, por lo que incluso utilizando una de las experiencias que mayor impacto tiene en los recursos del sistema, sale bien muy parado.

Esta experiencia en el consumo energético se puede llevar a los juegos u otros usos más intensos de la batería. Eso deja claro que es un móvil cuya batería pasa completamente del día sin problemas, y ese es otro de los puntos a tener en cuenta.

Tampoco le faltan detalles que suman, como su poco peso de 180 g, protección IP68 frente al agua, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, SIM dual, WiFi 6 / 6E y su sensor de huellas en pantalla para cerrar un móvil muy completo en todos sus vértices.

¿Me lo compro?

El Motorola Edge 50 no lo tiene nada fácil, con una oferta de móviles muy interesante en el rango de los 599 dollars en España y en el que se ha de enfrentar a los Pixel 8a de Google o el Nothing Phone (2), ambos a 549 dollars.

El Edge 50 tiene bien puestas sus cartas sobre la mesa y es un smartphone muy completo en todos sus aspectos para destacar por una gran fotografía, aunque no puede superar al del Pixel 8a, pero aquí entra en juego un diseño unibody distinto que también atrae a otros tipos de usuarios. Hay que recordar su resistencia grado militar y lo fino que es para que en este sentido sea un móvil a tener en cuenta.

También el valor de marca de Motorola emerge como otro punto importante, y más si cabe cuando desde el año pasado la compañía está pujando fuerte con un catálogo de móviles a destacar; incluso ha lanzado plegables como el Razr 50 que le ha puesto las cosas difíciles a Samsung.

Como ha hecho en estos dos últimos años, Motorola trae de nuevo al mercado español un móvil Android muy completo en todos sus vértices. Lo tiene complicado en uno de los rangos de precio más competitivos, en el que sabiendo elegir bien uno se puede llevar un gran smartphone a casa, como sucede con el Edge 50.
