If you have first generation AirPods Pro and you hear crackling or static soundsas well as other noise cancellation related issues, don’t worry. Not that this should be normal, but it’s more prevalent than it needs to be and Apple is offering a solution.
All this under one free replacement program that Apple itself offers and which does not even require having an Apple Store nearby. Of course, several conditions must be met for this.
Requirements for Apple to replace your AirPods Pro
It’s not enough to have AirPods Pro and just request a repair. In accordance with the provisions of Apple’s replacement program, these conditions must be met.
Affected models
As we mentioned in the introduction, this is a problem that only concerns the first AirPods Pro and not the AirPods Pro 2 (not even the model with USB-C). Therefore, they must be yes or yes AirPods Pro 1. Apart, It doesn’t matter if they no longer have a warranty. and where you purchased them, since the replacement program is applicable to everyone provided they are original.
Likewise, Apple states that they must be models manufactured before October 2020since it is the previous batches which are concerned. And it doesn’t have so much to do with the date of purchase, since some affected units were subsequently sold.
It’s difficult to know when your AirPods Pro were manufactured, so it’s a good idea to make an appointment if you experience any of the issues we describe below.
Problems encountered
Apple describes the two main issues found on these units before October 2020. The first of these are the clicks or static sounds which increase when we are in noisy environments, when we make a call or when we are moving to exercise.
The other problems detected are linked to the fact that noise cancellation not working as it should and a loss of bass sounds or an increase in background sounds occurs. This is something that should be more noticeable in noisy environments like the street or an airplane, where cancellation would have little effect.
How to Request a Free AirPods Pro Replacement
If you meet the conditions or if you simply have doubts and want to know if you meet them, you have several options for asking Apple for helpall being equally valid.
- Make an appointment at an Apple Store with technical service. Something you can do both from the Apple website and with the “Support” application for iPhone.
- Request an appointment at a SAT (Approved Technical Service) following the routes identical to those mentioned above.
- Request collection of AirPods from your homeby indicating this at the time of requesting assistance by the preceding means. In this case, they will take care of sending a carrier to your home who will already bring the packaging and shipping stickers.
It must be said that the the process is quick. If it is in an Apple Store or SAT, verification and delivery of the new unit happens almost instantly. If it’s from home, it can take up to ten days, although it’s usually quick.
Focusing on the latter case, let’s say that you will first be informed of its receipt so that you can authorize or not the change and once you have approved it, the new unit will be sent to you free of charge. Of course, you may have to pay for the replacement as a deposit up front, but it will be returned to you when you receive the new AirPods Pro.
How long will this replacement program last?
The replacement program started in October 2021 and although it usually lasts three years on average, the truth is that to date it is still open. There is therefore no deadline for its closure. In any case, we recommend that you hurry if you don’t want your defective AirPods Pro to remain without replacement.
