The first topic is the news of Monday, August 12. Patreon, the company that provides a membership platform for online content creators, announced that Apple is forcing them to switch from the Patreon iOS app to Apple’s payment system. This means that Apple will take its 30% cut of Patreon memberships paid through the app. Patreon is advising creators to either increase their fees to match Apple’s cut or tell new subscribers not to use the iOS app.
Christopher Lawley (@chrislawley_), who hosts the Comfort Zone podcast for MacStories, has some thoughts on this. He said:
This is one of the hardest times to be an independent creator. Ad revenue is at an all-time low, everyone has a subscription so good luck getting a new one, and platforms want their cut (:cough: YouTubes 45% :cough:). Even I considered getting a regular job, and I hate regular jobs. How can Apple not see that they’re not taking 30% from Patreon, they’re taking 30% from independent creators? The people they claim to love.

Our next topic is the 8GB RAM issue on Macs. On X, software developer Hasen Judi posted a screenshot of his M2 MacBook Air with 8GB of memory. He had no applications open except Activity Monitor, and 4.7GB of that memory was in use, more than half the amount of RAM on his MacBook Air.
The last topic of our show is the upcoming M4 Mac lineup. They’re reportedly set to start rolling out this fall and spring. Roman wrote a post arguing that Apple should have skipped the M4 and not updated the Mac until the M5 was ready. The main reason this should happen is that the M4 is now in the iPad Pro, and the Mac should have a better chip than the iPad Pro. Here are some email responses to the post sent to igamesnews:
[The] The iPad Pro didn’t ask for more performance with an M4, its problems aren’t about its lack of performance. Apple needs to start addressing the issue of the iPad OS outpacing the impressive hardware the iPad Pro was already capable of. But when you already have impressive results with the M2 and M3, it’s going to get harder to sell a new M series with each iteration.

To everything you said about the M4 chip, I nodded yes and yes. I have the iPad Pro M4. I am writing this note to you right now. I also have the MacBook Pro M3 Max that I use on my website. It is a monster machine, but I see no reason to buy the M4 when it comes out. I will definitely buy the M5 Max. I am sure many people feel the same way. I think Apple shot itself in the foot.
