A Consumer Reports study assessed how Instagram and Facebook collect information through the companies, uncovering an underlying problem
It’s not a mystery and it’s not something new, Instagram and Facebook, among other social networks and websites, collect user data through interaction and are intended for thousands of businesses. Consumer Reports conducted a study with the support of 700 volunteers in which they sought to determine the sources of all personal data used by Meta in which they publish personalized advertisements daily.
Each participant downloaded a data file from the last 3 years from their Facebook settings and provided it to the company behind the study. From there, we concluded that a total of 186,892 companies sent user data to Facebook of which 2,230 people submitted each study participant’s data to Facebook.

Data brokers are the most common source collected by Meta. Other companies like Amazon are among the top 10 companies that collect the most data.. Credit reporting companies and retailers like Home Depot and Walmart are also among these data guzzlers.
