Social networks have become one of the most common forms of communication, which implies that they are one of the most under attack. Instagram is a good example, with a slew of fake accounts harming its users, creating an environment that even invites us to take a break. That’s why parent company, Meta, started implementing a facial recognition system within the app that requires us to take a selfie
A selfie video to connect
It was Matt Navarra, a well-known social media consultant, who posted on his Twitter account what the new feature looks like.
As can be seen in the picture, the system asks us to take a selfie video, moving our head in different directions, so that it cannot be replaced by a photo.
For the time being this new requirement is used in new accounts, so those who already have one will not have to send this video selfie.
This information is transmitted to Instagram’s servers, although Meta indicates that this information will not be used to train its facial detection algorithms.
In addition, the data of our connection, as well as the video, will remain on these servers for 30 days, after which it will be deleted.
Despite this, and unsurprisingly, users are already critical of Meta’s measurement and doubt that claims that this data will not be used for other purposes will actually be met. Looking at the history of Facebook, we don’t blame them.
