If there’s one daunting decision Apple made in 2023, it’s not updating the AirPods Max. Not only have its high-end headphones not been updated since their 2020 debut, but they’re also one of the few remaining Apple devices that still have a Lightning port. With no immediate rumors of an update coming soon, engineer Ken Pillonel took it upon himself to do it himself.
Pillonel, who had already added USB-C to the iPhone before Apple, posted a video of the process on his Exploring the Simulation YouTube channel and it’s surprisingly not that difficult. It requires no drilling or special tools, but you will need to purchase a USB-C Flex card for 39.90 Swiss francs (around $45). The mod adds USB-C charging but does not provide USB-C audio due to AirPods Max processor limitations.
As with previous mods, the USB-C plug fits neatly into the space occupied by the Lightning port once the metal lip around the opening is removed.
The connector sits on top of the existing Lightning card, but Pilonel designed a card that “doesn’t touch any of the taller components.” He says he spent hours trying to find the right connector and it worked “first time.” However, he created a second version of the board with a flexible arm to eliminate any excess force on other components.
So if you’re tired of waiting for Apple to upgrade the AirPods Max with a USB-C port, now’s your chance to get it, without shelling out $550 for a brand new pair of earbuds.
Performing this operation on your AirPods Max naturally voids your warranty.
