Get ready to brighten up your iMessages. According to a MacRumors article citing “multiple sources familiar with the subject,” iOS 18 will take fun text effects even further by allowing you to add text effects to individual words in the message
It’s unclear whether these will be the same text effects currently available for entire messages, entirely new effects (like bold or italics), or something completely different. You can already add a handful of fun effects to your iMessages. There are full-screen effects like balloons, lasers and confetti, or text effects like clicking or invisible ink. These text effects, however, apply to your entire message.
Messages in iOS 18 is set to get a big upgrade with support for RCS, enabling much better communication with Android phones, AI-based autocomplete features, and maybe even AI-generated personalized emojis. It’s unclear whether these text effects will only apply to iMessages or also work with RCS messages, but Apple has incentive to continue making iMessage a more comprehensive and desirable alternative to “green bubbles,” even whether Android users can send messages more advanced than current SMS.
We’ll learn about all the changes coming to Messages in iOS 18 and macOS 15 at WWDC in June.
