Sometimes I look at my iPhone and the first thing I think is: How much do you have left, how much will you last? Improvements are coming, and iOS 18.1 is now available for download for most, along with equivalent versions of the rest of Apple’s operating systems. That is, iPadOS 18, tvOS 18, watchOS 11, and computer versions of the macOS 15 Sequoia operating system. But maybe my iPhone is not compatible with all, like Apple Intelligence.
In this scenario which is beginning to take shape, many people are wondering: Which iPhone models will be compatible with iOS 19? Apple hasn’t confirmed anything about this and won’t for a while. In fact, it won’t officially do so until the summer 2025 developers conference, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get an idea of which iPhones will be compatible. And those who won’t.
iPhone models (supposedly) compatible with iOS 19
With iOS 17, Apple left the iPhone behind And there are many iPhone phones compatible with iOS 18, but the arrival of generative AI required more power and left behind as many others as the iPhone XR and XSso we might see more reductions in the list of compatible models in the future. That targets another handful of models.
That said, let’s cut to the chase and see which ones would be the only ones compatible with iOS 19.
Obviously, to this list we must also add the hypothetical iPhone SE 4, which Apple would present in spring 2025. Although it is still a fairly distant rumor to be able to talk about the models that this basic range will bring, as is the case with the iPhone 17 Air, this lighter version of the basic model.
It is expected that each new model will already come with this version of the operating system installed as a base, but its compatibility with iOS 19 will be ensured, in any case, since there is no official data .
iPhone models NOT compatible with iOS 19
Based on the list of supposed compatibility, the iPhones that would not be compatible with iOS 19 would be:
- iPhone XR
- iPhoneX
- iPhone XS Max
- iPhoneX
- iPhone SE (first and second generation, probably)
- iPhone8
- iPhone 8 Plus
And to these we must add all the previous models and generations, that is to say:
- iPhone (1st generation – 2007) (remained on iPhone OS 3)
- iPhone 3G (remained on iOS 4)
- iPhone 3GS (remained on iOS 6)
- iPhone 4 (remained on iOS 9)
- iPhone 4s (remained on iOS 9)
- iPhone 5 (remained on iOS 10)
- iPhone 5c (remained on iOS 10)
- iPhone 5s (remained on iOS 12)
- iPhone 6 (remained on iOS 12)
- iPhone 6 Plus (remained on iOS 12)
- iPhone 6s (remained on iOS 15)
- iPhone 6s Plus (remained on iOS 15)
- iPhone SE (1st generation – 2016) (remained on iOS 15)
- iPhone 7 (remained on iOS 15)
- iPhone 7 Plus (remained on iOS 15)
iOS 19 release date
If Apple’s agenda does not change we should see the first official data on iOS 19 from June 2025the month in which the company usually holds its annual developer conference. At this point we would have a summer of 2025 with beta versions of this system and a final, stable release for the whole world in mid-September 2025, around 11-12, as usual.
This may seem distant to us, but I have no doubt that Apple must already have several of its developers working on it. For June 2025, the date of its presentation, there are only eight months left. It’s not that long.
How to install iOS 19
At the moment we cannot install iOS 19 on our iPhone because there are still months before the first versions appear, whether developer betas or open betas. But as soon as possible, the same method will be followed as with previous versions of iOS. Follow these steps:
- Enter ‘Settings‘ of the system; It’s the icon with the gear wheel
- Scroll down to the ‘sectionGeneral‘
- You will now see the section ‘Software update‘ from where you can, when the time comes, download and install iOS 19.
And that’s if you want to force a manual update, because if you don’t do anything, the iPhone will probably do it automatically. You can also install beta versions, of course, as long as you ask Apple itself.
