There is one thing certain about the upcoming iPadOS 16: Apple will showcase its most important features at WWDC in June 2022 and the update to Software It will finally arrive in September 2022.
There will likely be many productivity-related improvements to come and greater synergy with Mac apps.
There’s a reason iPadOS and iOS are two different operating systems. Besides having a bigger screen, there are differences in how people use iPad and iPhone. For example, many people use the Apple Pencil, a keyboard or even a mouse with the iPad.
This separation also applies to macOS: the touch screen on MacBook or Mac is still a taboo at Apple, even if there are laptop hybrids and Tablet popular as Microsoft Surface.
It’s a bummer for those who want iPads to work more like macOS. While the iPad is closer to the MacBook than the iPhone, iPadOS 15 still has some weak points that can frustrate MacBook users.
For example, using a mouse is still not a simple thing, as iOS applications generally do not offer this possibility. It is also necessary to improve the use of several apps at the same time, which sometimes fails due to lack of space despite solutions such as split screen.
In this case, Apple has the problem that the iPadOS must work perfectly even on the small screen of an iPad mini. It’s understandable that iOS apps optimized for iPhone or iPad look strange on macOS.
According to iDropnews, the new iPadOS will deliver a groundbreaking innovation that may have prevented some from switching to the iPad: Xcode, Logic Pro, and Final Cut Pro are all set to come to the iPad.
These programs will be fully functional, but will only be available with iPads with the M1 chip (i.e. the expensive iPad Pro models). It is probably for reasons of Equipment since only the new iPad Pros have 8GB or 16GB of RAM (enough for Final Cut Pro).
The iPad poses many problems, but it also offers good opportunities. For decades these professional programs have worked for the Mac, but now all of these features will need to be able to be used with a touchscreen.
There are many times this could be a problem, but the touchscreen can also have its advantages. As an app like Logic Remote proves, you can already use an iPhone or iPad to control Logic and play instruments and mix clips with gestures.
Only with these programs can the iPad Pro become an alternative to laptops for professionals.
Interface and design innovations
Minor visual fixes are likely to come as well. Apple could revamp the Start screen and new icons and icons should arrive widgets more interactive. With iPadOS 16, widgets they could even be used on the lock screen, so you can check the weather without having to unlock your iPad.
Augmented reality and virtual reality functions should also be developed further, but it is not clear whether these changes will already arrive in the next version.
The Files app improvement hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it would be nice if it happened. There is plenty of room for improvement when connecting external devices and network drives. AirDrop works well, but if you want to export video content weighing a few gigabytes, you’ll need something faster.
