Since Apple announced the first iPhone in 2007, there have been several evolutions between generations. However, there is an element that remains intact up to iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro: the mute button. This little tab that sits above the volume buttons and is used to mute the phone.
This is something that Android users have always envied. Even its staunchest supporters, and even Apple’s detractors, agree that more manufacturers should use something similar in their devices
We lose history, we gain functionality
According to an anonymous leaker, and as collected by MacRumors, Apple is thinking of replace the mute button with a kind of multifunction button which can do the action button function of Apple Watch Ultra. Like the volume and power buttons, it wouldn’t leak, but would have a haptic sensor that would simulate it, just like the Magic TrackPad on the Mac.
I understand this is an improvement. After all, what now only performs one function can be configured with dozens of them to better suit the user’s needs. Yet it is true that one way or another the mute button is part of the iPhone’s own history, as a concept and as a device. In a way, to change it is to change part of that story.
This change we’re talking about is definitely for the better, hopefully. Either way, it’s just a rumor, which may or may not be true. What is clear is that this would mark a before and after on the iPhone. So if for some reason this turns out to be true: rest in peace mute button.
