With a starting price of $ 489 / MXN $ 10,999, the iPhone SE is Apple’s most affordable new iPhone. It’s a tempting option for those who love the Apple ecosystem but don’t want to spend $ 800 / MXN $ 20,000 or more on a new mobile.
But it doesn’t update at the same time as other iPhones, or at least not as often. It’s always a good tip to say “don’t buy an iPhone in July or August,” but that doesn’t apply to the iPhone SE.
Here’s what we know about the iPhone SE and when it’s next big update, along with our recommendation on when to buy it.
iPhone SE: prices and specifications
Release: April 2020
IPhone SE is rarely updated every year. The original iPhone SE was released in 2016, and there wasn’t a second generation until April 2020 (although its storage was expanded in 2017). It basically has the body of the iPhone 8 (including Touch ID, LCD display and single rear camera) with the A13 Bionic processor of the iPhone 11.
This is what usually happens with the iPhone SE: Apple takes a cell phone from a few years ago and changes its processor to its latest chip. This makes it much cheaper to produce, and therefore Apple’s most affordable iPhone. The current model starts at $ 489 / MXN $ 10,999 (64GB) and is hard to find cheaper.
The iPhone SE is still out in the spring, and we expect a new model to arrive maybe in 2022.
iPhone SE: Why buy it
The iPhone SE hasn’t been updated in 2021, but it’s still a very capable iPhone at this price point (iPhone 11 has the same processor and costs $ 200 / MXN $ 6,000 more.
Obviously, you’ll get Face ID and edge-to-edge display with the iPhone 11, along with a better camera, but those on a budget won’t have a better iPhone for a while.
iPhone SE: why wait
If you’re in no rush, the next iPhone SE (we believe it will arrive in Spring 2022) will definitely be a lot better. There are conflicting reports: some say it will have the iPhone 8 body and Touch ID; others that will have the iPhone 11 body and Face ID.
Either way, if you follow the same pattern, you will have the A15 processor which will be introduced with the iPhone 13 this fall. It will give you faster performance, longer battery life, and better photo and audio quality.
And perhaps more importantly, it will be 5G compatible, which is currently not hugely important but will be in the years to come. It will undoubtedly be the cheapest 5G iPhone.
igamesnews recommends: BUY
If you want to wait until the next iPhone SE, you’ll have to wait until Spring 2022 (or later). Plus, based on rumors already circulating about the new model, it doesn’t look like it’s a big update.
Granted, 5G and an A15 chip sound great, but if the body remains the same as the iPhone 8, it won’t seem like a big step forward. And if you want to buy a cheap iPhone, surely you don’t care about the latest features, do you?
