Google has a gem in the rough with Android Auto. The system for car screens has succeeded in convincing drivers, who prefer it to systems created by manufacturers and supplied by default. According to Google itself, 200 million cars are already on the road with Android Auto. Most people prefer to connect their cell phone to the car and use apps like Google Maps and YouTube.

For manufacturers, it is very difficult to compete with a system that evolves as quickly as this one. It seems like it was yesterday that the Coolwalk interface was presented, but in reality since then two new complete versions of the system have already been released, with all sorts of new features.

On the occasion of CES 2024, Google took the opportunity to present even more new features, which will arrive little by little with each update of Android Auto. Some changes are minor, but others can completely change the way we drive, especially if we have an electric car.

Android Auto better with electric

And one of the biggest new features lies in the Integration of Google Maps with electric cars to solve the autonomy problem. It is well known that the fear of running out of battery is one of the main obstacles for this type of vehicle, and Google wants to contribute to this, using a new direct connection with the car’s systems.

Compatible models will be able to share real-time battery information with Google Maps, which will be used to calculate routes and assist the driver. For example, Maps will be able to display the battery level that we will have left once we arrive at our destination, in case we want to look for a charging station; and linked to this, it will be able to suggest stops along the route to recharge, estimating the time each would take in the final calculation of the journey. This way it will be easier to plan long trips with an electric car. The function is already reaching the first users, although the participation of manufacturers is necessary; For the moment, Ford is first with its Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning.

And what can we do while waiting for our car to charge? Well, for example, surfing the Internet. Surprisingly, Google confirmed the launch of Chrome for Android Auto, a version of the browser that will be very similar to the one usable on Android tablets. So it is not a limited browser and we will have access to all functions such as tabs and synchronization with our Google account. Initially, Chrome is coming first to select Volvo and Polestar models, and will be available on more cars throughout the year.

We can visit our favorite pages from the car screen, although it is expected that there will be limitations of use such as those of YouTube, which does not allow watching videos with the car running. When it comes to video, Android Auto supports new streaming apps, including Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll to watch series in the car. Finally, Android Auto receives new weather applications, such as The Weather Channel to know the weather on the road.

Looking ahead, Google predicts that more and more automotive brands will rely on Android Auto and its application platform; Models from Nissan, Ford and Lincoln are expected to launch this year, and it was recently announced that Porsche is jumping on the Android Automotive bandwagon with Google. Support for advanced features such as digital key will also be improved; This feature allows you to use your cell phone as a car key, and it’s already coming to Volvo models.
