The portable console market is not stopping. Thanks to the latest chips, these devices already have enough power to run relatively modern games, which until recently required expensive and not very portable hardware. The latest cheap handheld consoles are capable of a lot.
Anbernic is a brand that always appears whenever we talk about portable consoles. Although it’s most famous for its Game Boy-inspired models, it actually has several devices that target different niches.
The model presented today is a good example. The RG28XX can be defined as a miniature PSP; Not only is it a similar layout, with a horizontal format with controls on both sides of the screen, but it has enough power to run games on the Sony console.
The new Anbernic console
This was demonstrated by Anbernic himself in the presentation video, who instead of reviewing the features prefers to review the classic games that can be played perfectly on the console. As usual, this is done with emulators, whose legality has always been fragile, but which are the specialty of these companies.
The Anbernic RG28XX seems capable of running PSP games without issue, which is striking given that it’s a much smaller and portable console; We should have no problem carrying it in our pocket or bag, judging by the video.
It is also striking that the console seems to be able to run games from other, more demanding consoles, such as the Sega Dreamcast; although obviously, its specialty will be games for portable and retro consoles like the Nintendo DS or the PlayStation respectively.
Even if Anbernic has not shared all the technical characteristics, everything indicates that it uses the same chip as the RG35XX launched at the end of 2022; This model had a vertical format, and everything indicates that Anbernic reused the components to launch this RG28XX at a lower price.
However, it is not a simple “clone”. The screen is slightly smaller, 2.8 inches, which greatly contributes to the portability of the device and will make it ideal for playing anywhere. Additionally, the aspect ratio is 4:3, so it will fit perfectly in retro or modern games that support this size to avoid black bands. We will still have the option of connecting an external display via the HDMI port, as well as a remote control via wireless or cable connection.
Although there is no official announcement, we can expect a price around 50 dollars when it becomes available in stores like Amazon.
