General Motors went very hard with Android Auto and CarPlay to reject both as we met a few weeks ago. NOW Scott Millervice president of software and operating systems at General Motors, thinks that such a decision is not so terrible.

GM is clear and has a great alternative
From Miller’s own words, it seems that General Motors is very confident and the strong demand for CarPlay and Android Auto doesn’t even scare them, which may impact their commercial vehicle sales.
It all started a few days ago when the company announced that its future electric vehicles would not allow access to Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. What is the same as if you buy a GMC Sierra Electric forget to take advantage of Android Auto.
This news was a strong rejection by a large part of the rest of the manufacturers of vehicles as well as the specialized press. Such massive demand for these two systems would put this company at risk.
Knowing that Apple mentioned that 80% new buyers of a vehicle insist on having CarPlay, you can understand this risky operation from General Motors.
What Miller thinks, according to The Verge in the interview, is that the demand is just a sign that customers are always looking for a better experience in their new vehicles. In other words, he doesn’t see it as an end point.
General Motors’ “holistic” proposal
GM views Android Auto and CarPlay favorably, but thinks it’s only a “good” experience. The automaker is designing an in-vehicle operating system that is “holistically integrated”meaning it will offer comprehensive information about the vehicle’s battery and other components, without ever forgetting about usability and driver experience.
An example given by Miller himself relates to one of the critical points of using an electric vehicle. When a Chevy Blazer EV owner heads for a power station charge, the power station’s native software can heat the battery to bring it to its sweet spot for faster charging.
It is this level of holistic integration that General Motors wants for its electric vehicles and which, for the moment, is not available in either of the two systems which would be owned by Google and Apple.
Miller thinks the operating system they’re creating might make you forget about Android Auto or CarPlay. He will enter the vehicle and everything will work properly. He the system will recognize you and place everything so you can prefer this experience to connecting your mobile via Bluetooth to both software systems.
Of course, CarPlay and Android Auto will continue available in fossil fuel vehicles and it will be only in the electrics where this radical change will occur; which will also allow you to connect with Bluetooth for audio calls, text messages and music streaming.
In any case, we will have to see the final decision, because it would not be the first time that well-known car manufacturers have backed down, so it will be interesting to follow General Motors and this total rejection of the Apple and Google systems.
