Security patches and Google Play system updates are elements that allow us to keep our phone up to date without the manufacturer intervening. Of course, official updates are those that integrate new features and those that all users expect: on average, they usually end after two years, although there are now high-end smartphones that reach up to seven years with guaranteed updates.
This is new in these last generations, since until very recently, in a few years, we said goodbye to the official updates of our mobile phone. Fortunately, LineageOS, as well as other community distributions, keep mobile phones up to date with an Android based on AOSP (the source code of the operating system) and that speeds up its operation.

In addition to new phones, LineageOS lets you update hundreds of phones, which you can find in the Custom ROM Wiki.
