Apple has released the new M2 chip in its 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro laptops, two teams whose dividing line has blurred over time to be more diffuse than ever. This generation of ultrabooks comes with a huge increase in price and confusion for some users about which hardware to choose. We comment on their characteristics and put them face to face.

Design: One of the reasons to buy a new device is that it looks new, “fresh”, different from the previous ones, and that MacBook Air M2 has a refreshed design which compares it to the new 14 and 16 inch Pro, adopting the notch. The MacBook Pro M2 retains the design of previous generations and the Touch Bar, something Apple got rid of in its most expensive laptops.

Filter: The redesign of the MacBook Air M2 with the notch has saved its screen a little space, in addition to being compatible with billions of colors and not just millions of colors, like on the MacBook Pro M2.

Processor: The M2 chip offers 1.4 times better performance on certain tasks. The MacBook Pro M2 comes standard with a 10-core GPU and hold the fan
so it doesn’t suffer as much in demanding projects, such as high resolution 4K-8K video editing. -
webcam: Video calls have become popular with confinement and telecommuting, which has prompted manufacturers to improve their computer webcams. Apple shared the MacBook Air M2 with a 1080p FaceTime HD webcam to have a high resolution, whereas the MacBook Pro M2 is always 720p (even though they were announced at the same time).

connectivity: Another point where the MacBook Air M2 wins, since it integrates MagSafe 3 charging port
to avoid accidents when recharging your battery. Both devices have USB-C Thunderbolt/USB 4, Wi-Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0 ports. -
Touch bar: Love it or hate it. Some people find the Touch Bar very useful, the Touch Bar that changes depending on the program you are using and displays shortcuts. The MacBook Air never had it and Apple removed it from its 14-inch and 16-inch Pros, but the MacBook Pro M2 does.

Price: the prices of the two computers have increased considerably with the arrival of the M2 chip, and this was particularly felt on the MacBook Air M2, which went from 1,129 dollars to 1,519 dollars, 400 euro difference. The MacBook Pro M2 starts at 1,619 dollars. You can already find the offers of these teams.
MacBook Air M2 or MacBook Pro M2, which one to buy?
The MacBook Air M2 is an evolution that brings the ultrabook closer to the 14-inch and 16-inch Pro models in design (less in power), and whose the inclusion of the MagSafe 3 connection, Full HD webcam and sound system is appreciated. However, its 400 euro price increase over the previous generation makes it less attractive and it is no longer a laptop “for everyone”.
However, the MacBook Pro M2, which has also increased in price, doesn’t bring much new: no new design, it retains the 720p webcam and the Touch Bar continues, love it or hate it. Is also a team difficult to justify and that if it’s meant to be configured with more RAM or internal storage, as is the case with the MacBook Air M2, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro is more economical.
If you have to choose between one or the other, the MacBook Air M2 is flashier in many ways and it costs less than its “big brother”.
