2020 has been a year marked by work and home lessons, which has caused many users to update their devices to better do their daily tasks. This is something that has led Apple, and other brands, to see a rebound in sales of their computers. Specifically, Apple saw how the market share of Mac went from 6.7% to 7.5%.
However, Apple has a new rival that surpassed its market level in 2020: Chromebooks
This rise has led to a decline in the share of Windows computers with the Microsoft system went from 87.5% to 81% throughout 2020. At least that’s what the data IDC to which you had access GeekWire.
macOS is no longer the second most used operating system on computers
As can be seen, the data is good for Apple in general terms since its sales increased a lot in 2020, it is estimated that there were 30% more sales in the last quarter of 2020
However, Chromebooks have overtaken Apple and they are the second most used system. While it is true that this range does not really compete with the MacBook, but rather with the iPad, it is something that needs to be considered and valued.
Basically, here’s how the personal computer market share numbers can be summed up:
- Windows: down 4.9 points, from 85.4% in 2019 to 80.5% in 2020.
- Chrome OS: + 4.4 points, from 6.4% in 2019 to 10.8% in 2020.
- macOS: up 0.8 points, from 6.7% in 2019 to 7.5% in 2020.
Also keep in mind that 2020 was a special year marked by a situation never experienced before. It’s possible that throughout this 2021, everything will return to its place and Chromebooks will reduce their market share to previous levels.
