Mercado Libre is one of the most important e-commerce companies in Latin America. Founded in Argentina more than 20 years ago, the company is currently present in more than a dozen countries.
But, since companies and individuals can carry out buying and selling operations on Mercado Libre, there are those who publish products that break the rulesincluding counterfeits.
Fortunately, the Mercado Libre system is very effective in detecting and eliminating them quickly. In just three months, they eliminated more than 5 million rule-breaking products, including more than 875,000 publications were created in Mexico.
These are the categories with the most deleted posts in each country
Mercado Libre’s transparency report for the second fiscal quarter of 2023 revealed that the company deleted more than 5.4 million messages for violating the platform’s rules. These posts included counterfeit products, books, games and even animals.
The e-commerce company detailed which are the categories with the most deleted posts in each region of Latin America during this period. In Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, the category with the highest number of rule-breaking posts is “Counterfeit Products”.. On the other hand, in Colombia, Chile, Peru and the rest of the markets, the category with the most violations is “Books”.
In the version of the platform for Mexico, the Mercado Libre system detected and eliminated 875,352 publications that violated the platform’s rules, during the second fiscal quarter of 2023, report our colleagues from Xataka México. Other categories that have had many posts removed in the country include “Software,” “Books,” “Medication,” “Accounts & Games” and “Misclassified Adult Products.”

Mercado Libre ensures that its system detects the vast majority of posts that violate the rules, and that only a tiny fraction of posts removed are due to user complaints.
More specifically, the company mentions in its report that its systems detected 97% of 5.4 million counterfeit posts, and only 3% of them were reported by users.
Mercado Libre operates across much of Latin America, including Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Brazil, Peru and Uruguay. The company assures that the more than 5 million products eliminated during this period represent only 0.84% of total publications produced on the platform.
