In an auto industry forum, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz made it clear that they have yet to discuss including the next generation of CarPlay in their cars.
Apple unveiled big teasers about the next generation of CarPlay at WWDC 2022, an experience that seems perfect but may not appeal to everyone. This is the case of the CEO of Mercedes-Benz, Ola Källenius.
Mercedes-Benz is not very sure about including CarPlay in its cars
In a discussion about the future of the auto industry where Apple’s system for cars was brought up (via Decoder Podcast), the CEO spoke out when asked if he was going to enable a phone portable to connect to support car interface. The answer focused on the fact that Mercedes already has its own digital interface
“I don’t think you can tear any part of it out and just say, here’s an isolated island.” The latter concerning the reference that Apple CarPlay will be able to give a new face to the system integrated in cars of different brands (and boy, can they copy it). What the CEO of Mercedes-Benz does not want is that all functions of the car are covered compared to CarPlay.
He doesn’t give in to pressure, insists he talk to Apple about the issue
On the podcast, host Nilay Patel continued to press for a more in-depth response from Källenius. It justifies that they have a good relationship with Apple, it is only natural that the Mercedes-Benz logo appeared during the WWDC presentation. Except Mercedes will have a discussion with Apple on the subject in order to preserve the experience that the brand provides to its customers.
What is very clear to us is that Apple and Mercedes-Benz are not on the same channel. They have very different expectations from their own system and from the union they already have. The problem is that making an announcement guaranteeing that the German car brand will be part of it’s a strong enough commitment that in the end it won’t end up being part of the next generation of CarPlay.
