Cameras have already become one of the first things users look at when buying a mobile in Europe. Manufacturers have responded to this demand with ever larger sensors, more powerful algorithms and, in some cases, recognized names in the industry.

Some of the most famous brands in the world of photography already have a foothold in the smartphone market. For example, it’s well known that major phones from OnePlus and Oppo have Hasselblad-branded cameras, but they’re not the only ones. Vivo brags a lot about its alliance with ZEISS, and Xiaomi has been successful in getting users to watermark their photos as the Leica brand appears.

Now another great brand can be added to the list. We are talking about Canon which, according to a leak on the Weibo social network discovered by Digital Chat Station, is preparing for a similar alliance with a smartphone manufacturer.

Canon, of course, is one of the most recognizable names in photography; and we imagine that’s exactly what’s kept it from appearing on mobile so far. But it looks like the time has come, and the company is already eyeing several manufacturers to enter the smartphone business.

At this time, it is not known which manufacturer brought the cat into the water. There are fewer and fewer candidates, since some of the brands that have not yet reached a similar agreement have done so because they don’t need it (Like Sony, which also manufactures DLSR cameras, or Google, which prefers to promote its algorithms). It’s possible that one of the manufacturers we mentioned earlier would prefer to switch sides, if Canon can come up with something interesting. Or it may be that some of the brands that do not have such an agreement take advantage of it, such as Realme, Honor or Motorola.

The big question, then, is what Canon’s arrival in the mobile sector will look like. So far we have seen two different approaches. For one thing, some offers are essentially sponsorship, involving little more than putting the logo next to cameras or putting a watermark on photos. In other cases, the manufacturer has become more involved, collaborating in the development of algorithms or even lenses for the sensors, as is the case of ZEISS with Vivo.

If Canon decides to join the party late, we hope it does so at least in a way that shows its strengths in the world of photography.
